Privacy policy

This policy explains what Hay & Hutch collects, why, and what we do not collect. It is written to be read rather than to be technically unfalsifiable, so if something here is unclear, ask.

What we collect

• Nothing, if you just read. There is no account, no login and no newsletter sign-up on this site. Browsing it requires you to give us nothing.
• What you type into the contact form. Your name, email address, chosen topic and message. These are sent to us by email so we can reply, and are not added to any list or used for marketing.
• Aggregate analytics, if you have not blocked them. See the section below.
• Standard server logs, which our hosting provider keeps as a normal part of serving a website.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages people read and which links they click. It is loaded after the page is interactive so it cannot slow the site down, and we use it in aggregate — to see that a page is read, not to follow an individual.

GA4 sets cookies and, when you click a buy link, we send an event recording which merchant and which page the click came from. That event does not include anything you have typed. Google's own handling of the data it collects is governed by its policies rather than ours. If you block analytics in your browser or with an extension, the site works normally and we simply see less.

Affiliate links

Product links on this site route through our own redirect and then to the retailer with an Amazon Associates tag attached. The retailer may set its own cookies when you arrive, and that is how a commission is attributed. We do not receive your name, your email address or your payment details from any retailer, only aggregate reports of qualifying purchases. What we do not do

• We do not sell or rent your data. To anyone, for any purpose.
• We do not run a mailing list, so your address cannot end up on one.
• We do not serve display advertising, so there are no ad-network trackers on this site.
• We do not use social media embeds or share widgets, which are a common source of third-party tracking on content sites.
• We do not attempt to identify individual readers.

Cookies

The site itself sets no cookies for its own purposes. The cookies you may encounter come from Google Analytics, and from a retailer after you follow a product link. Blocking cookies in your browser does not break anything here.

How long we keep things

Contact form messages are kept in the inbox they arrive in for as long as they are useful for handling the correspondence, and deleted when they are not. Analytics data is retained according to the retention settings on the Google Analytics property.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what data we hold about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted. Since the only data we hold that could identify you is a contact form message you chose to send, this usually amounts to asking us to delete an email, which we will do on request. Children

This site is written for adults choosing housing for an animal, and we do not knowingly collect information from children. If a child has sent us a contact form message and you would like it deleted, email the address above and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the update date at the top of this page changes with it. We do not maintain a separate archive of previous versions.
