Best ferret cages

Our pick is the MidWest Critter Nation Double Unit (162): two levels of six square feet, half-inch bar spacing, full-width doors and deep pans. The Savic Royal Suite 95 has more floor per level at 6.4 square feet and splits into two independent cages, and is harder to get spares for in the US. The Ferret Nation 182 is the same cage as the Critter Nation with one-inch bars, which is fine for adults and is why kits escape.

This is an unusually easy category to shop in once you know what to look at, because the leading cages are nearly identical on floor area and differ sharply on one specification. Our ferret cage size guide sets out why bar spacing rather than floor area is the filter; this page applies it.

The criteria

1. 1.Bar spacing. Half an inch or tighter. A ferret assesses a gap with its skull, and a kit's skull passes a one-inch gap. No welfare body publishes a figure, so this is our threshold and we label it as ours.
2. 2.Usable floor per level, at least six square feet. Per level rather than total, because ferrets genuinely use vertical space rather than a shelf being somewhere to sit.
3. 3.Solid flooring and ramp covers. Wire floors and bare wire ramps cause foot injuries.
4. 4.Cleaning access. Full-width doors and deep removable pans. You will be doing this weekly for up to a decade.
5. 5.Escape resistance beyond the bars: latch design, gaps at pan level, gaps where a stand meets a cage. Ferret escape-proofing.

Everything side by side

Note that every cage here clears the VCA suggestion comfortably, including the one we rank last. That is exactly why we do not use it as a filter, and why the table above leads with bar spacing.

Why the Critter Nation 162 wins

Half-inch bars on a six-square-foot level. That combination is the whole recommendation. It is the same cage as the Ferret Nation in every other respect — same footprint, same doors, same pans, same stand — with a bar gap a kit cannot get its head through.

Full-width doors. Both MidWest Nation cages have them and it is genuinely the second-best thing about them. A cage whose far corner you cannot reach is a cage whose far corner does not get cleaned, and a ferret cage needs cleaning properly rather than superficially.

Deep pans and locking swing-up ramps with covers. Ferrets kick litter and ferrets injure feet on bare wire ramps. Both are solved in the box.

Its honest weaknesses: half-inch horizontal bars give less climbing purchase than the Ferret Nation's one-inch, which is a real loss for an animal that climbs; it is heavy and awkward to assemble alone; and the casters roll more freely on hard floors than you want.

Why the Savic is a close second

On specification the Savic Royal Suite 95 beats the Critter Nation: 928 square inches per level against 864, 13mm spacing which is functionally the same half-inch, horizontal climbing bars that recover what the Critter Nation's tight mesh loses, and the ability to split into two independent cages — which solves introductions, illness and a broken bond in one feature.

We rank it second on availability rather than on merit. It is harder to buy in the US than the MidWest cages and materially harder to get a replacement pan or shelf for, and over a ferret's six-to-ten-year life you will want a replacement pan. The Ferret Nation, and who it is actually for

We are not going to be coy about this: the Ferret Nation 182 is a good cage, marginally larger per level than the Critter Nation, usually cheaper, and with better climbing purchase. Its one-inch bar spacing is adequate for a grown ferret.

It is also the reason kits escape, and a jill who can flatten her head through a one-inch gap will. So our position is: buy it if your ferrets are adults, you have measured one against a one-inch gap, and you value the climbing. Buy the Critter Nation if there is any doubt, or if a kit is coming. Why the Prevue is last

620 square inches per level is 28 percent less than the Critter Nation, and 7/8 inch bar spacing is close enough to one inch to carry the same risk for a kit. It fits a 31-inch footprint where the others need 36, and a hammock and shelves are included. That is the whole case for it: it solves a space problem and does nothing else better. If you can fit a 36-inch cage, fit one.

What the cage does not solve

Two things no cage on this page addresses, and both are published requirements. VCA sets a temperature ceiling of 80F (27C), which is about where you put the cage rather than which cage it is — see cage placement. And VCA requires at least two to three hours a day out of the cage, noting that more is better, which means the best cage here with no out-of-cage time is a worse setup than the last one with plenty.
