Ferrets
The best multi-level ferret cages, ranked by floor per tier
Ferrets do want height, and every cage sold on that promise counts its levels differently. Four cages measured on what each tier actually gives the animal.

Buy the MidWest Critter Nation Double Unit. Ferrets do prefer a multi-level cage — VCA states plainly that multi-tiered cages are preferred — and the Critter Nation is the cage that gives two real tiers of 864 square inches each behind half-inch bars, which is the only bar gap here a ferret kit cannot push its head through. The Savic Royal Suite 95 gives more floor per tier and splits into two cages, and is harder to buy in the United States. The Ferret Nation 182 is the same frame at one-inch spacing. The Prevue 485 is a third smaller per tier than either and is here as the compact option, not the good one.
Ferret cage suggested minimum · suggested minimum
24in x 24in x 18in high (60cm x 60cm x 45cm)
Our conversion: 576 square inches, or 4 square feet, of floor
The question behind the search is whether height is a gimmick, and it is not. A ferret spends 12 to 18 hours a day asleep, by VCA's own figure, and the waking hours are spent climbing, tunnelling and dropping into things. A single-story cage with the same footprint gives the animal the same floor and none of the vertical route, which is the part a ferret actually uses. That is why the honest version of this roundup is not a list of cages with the most levels — it is a list of cages whose levels are big enough to be worth climbing to.
Where listings mislead is in the counting. A cage advertised as four levels frequently has two full-width pans and two shelves that are a third of the width, and the shelves are counted as levels because nothing stops a manufacturer counting them. Our arithmetic below counts only the continuous full-width surfaces an animal can lie down across, which is also how our ferret cage size pillar treats it.
The filters, in the order we apply them
- 1.Bar spacing, as a pass or fail. Half an inch for a household with kits or a small jill. A one-inch gap is fine for a grown hob and is the single most common reason a young ferret ends up behind a kitchen unit. A cage that fails gets named as failing, however tall it is.
- 2.Usable floor per tier. The continuous full-width surface, our own arithmetic from the manufacturer's external dimensions. Shelves, ramp covers and hammocks are not floor.
- 3.Number of full tiers, not advertised levels. Two full-width pans beats four part-width shelves every time.
- 4.Ramp safety. A ramp that locks flat against the frame when you are cleaning, and that a ferret cannot fall off the open side of. VCA notes wooden flooring should be avoided, which rules out the bare plywood ramp a lot of DIY builds use.
- 5.Cleaning access, last. Full-width doors on a cage you will be cleaning twice a week for six years. It breaks ties and never outranks bar spacing.

The three cages with two genuine full-width tiers
All three of these give at least 6 square feet per tier on a full-width pan rather than a shelf. They differ on bar spacing, which is the specification that decides between them. Full assessments of all four, including the compact one, are further down.

36 x 24 = 864 sq in (6 sq ft) per level, two levels
The half-inch bar spacing is the whole argument: it is the same cage as the Ferret Nation with a gap a ferret kit cannot get its head through.

What each tier actually measures
| Cage | Full tiers | Usable floor per tier | Bars | Cage height | Ramps |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Critter Nation 162 | 2 | 864 sq in (6 sq ft) | 1/2 in | 51.25 in of cage (130cm) | Locking swing-up |

| Ferret Nation 182 | 2 | 900 sq in (6.25 sq ft) | 1 in | ~51 in of cage (130cm) | Locking, with covers |
| Prevue 485 | 2 | 620 sq in (4.3 sq ft) | 7/8 in | 41.5 in without stand (105cm) | Ramps and shelves |
Bar spacing, external dimensions and level counts are each manufacturer's own published figures, read 2026-09-27 and linked on every product card. Floor areas, metric conversions and the cage-section heights for the two MidWest double units are our arithmetic from those dimensions, shown so you can check them. Retail listings quote the MidWest cages at 62.5-63in; that figure includes the rolling stand, which is not cage.
The table makes the decision smaller than it looks. Three of these four cages are the same cage within half a square foot per tier, so floor area is not what you are choosing between. You are choosing between a half-inch bar gap, a 13mm one and a one-inch one, and between a cage whose spares arrive tomorrow and one that ships from Belgium.
Why the second tier matters more than a third or fourth
Going from one tier to two changes what the animal can do: it adds a climb, a drop, a high sleeping place away from the litter corner, and the option of putting food at one height and the hammock at another. Going from two tiers to four, on most cages that advertise it, adds shelving. A ferret will use a shelf, but it will not sleep stretched out on something eight inches deep, and the shelf is usually bought at the cost of headroom on the tier below.
This is also where the Prevue 485 loses. It is a competent two-tier cage, and 620 square inches per tier is 28 percent less floor than the Critter Nation while standing 25cm shorter. It solves a room-size problem, and if the room is the constraint it is a reasonable buy for one adult ferret. It is not a smaller version of the same thing.
How many ferrets each of these actually holds
VCA's suggested minimum is 24 x 24 x 18 inches high for a ferret, which is 576 square inches of floor. Read literally, a single Critter Nation tier is one and a half times that figure, and a double unit is three times it. We do not read it that way, because the figure is published as a suggested minimum for a cage rather than as a per-animal allowance, and because a ferret's cage is where it spends the hours it is not out with you. Our own working position is one full 6-square-foot tier per two ferrets, which puts the Critter Nation 162 at four animals and the Prevue 485 at two. Housing two ferrets works that arithmetic through in full.
The assessments
Our pick · Ferrets of any age, and kits especially
MidWest Critter Nation Double Unit (162)
The half-inch bar spacing is the whole argument: it is the same cage as the Ferret Nation with a gap a ferret kit cannot get its head through.
- Dimensions
- 36 x 24 x 63 in including the rolling stand
- Continuous floor
- 36 x 24 = 864 sq in (6 sq ft) per level, two levels
- Bar spacing
- 1/2 in horizontal
- Material
- Powder-coated steel with deep removable plastic pans
- Levels and ramps
- Two levels with a locking swing-up ramp and full-width doors
What it gets right
- 1/2 in bar spacing holds a kit that 1 in spacing does not
- 6 sq ft of usable floor per level, comfortably over our per-level bar
- Full-width doors mean you can reach every corner, which matters weekly
- Deep pans contain litter rather than spreading it
What it gets wrong
- Horizontal half-inch bars give less climbing purchase than wider spacing
- Heavy and awkward to assemble alone
- The stand's casters roll on hard floors more than you want them to
Who should buy something else
Not necessary if your ferrets are adults and you have measured their head width against 1 in. The Ferret Nation costs less and climbs better; the half-inch is insurance you may not need.

Number 2 · Two ferrets that sometimes need separating
Savic Royal Suite 95 Rat and Ferret Cage
The most floor per level of the three big ferret cages and the only one that splits into two separate cages, at 13mm spacing that is functionally the Critter Nation's half-inch.
- Dimensions
- 95 x 63 x 159 cm (37.4 x 24.8 x 62.6 in)
- Continuous floor
- 95 x 63 cm = 5,985 cm2, about 928 sq in (6.4 sq ft) per level
- Bar spacing
- 13mm (about 1/2 in)
- Material
- Powder-coated steel with horizontal and vertical mesh, made in Belgium
- Levels and configuration
- Two levels that can be split into two separate cages
What it gets right
- 928 sq in per level, more than either MidWest cage
- 13mm spacing is effectively the half-inch standard
- Splits into two independent cages, which solves introductions and illness
- Horizontal bars give climbing purchase that half-inch horizontal mesh usually loses
What it gets wrong
- Harder to buy in the US than the MidWest cages, and spares are harder still
- 159cm tall, so the top level is above eye level for many owners
- Costs more than the Critter Nation
Who should buy something else
Not the sensible pick if you want next-day spares and a replacement pan from a local retailer. That is where the MidWest cages win regardless of specification.

Number 3 · Adult ferrets that climb
MidWest Ferret Nation Double Unit (182)
Slightly more floor per level than the Critter Nation and a one-inch bar gap, which is fine for a grown ferret and the reason kits escape.
- Dimensions
- 36 x 25 x 62.5 in including the rolling stand
- Continuous floor
- 36 x 25 = 900 sq in (6.25 sq ft) per level, two levels
- Bar spacing
- 1 in
- Material
- Powder-coated steel with deep removable plastic pans
- Levels and ramps
- Two levels with locking swing-up ramps and ramp covers
What it gets right
- 6.25 sq ft per level, marginally more than the Critter Nation
- 1 in bars give much better climbing purchase
- Same full-width doors, deep pans and locking ramps
- Usually cheaper than the equivalent Critter Nation
What it gets wrong
- 1 in spacing is the single reason ferret kits get out of this cage
- No way to retrofit narrower spacing; the fix is a different cage or wire panels
Who should buy something else
Never for kits, and not for a small jill who can flatten her head through a one-inch gap. Measure the animal, not the marketing, and buy the Critter Nation if there is any doubt.

Number 4 · A smaller room and a single adult ferret
Prevue Pet Products Feisty Ferret Home 485
A cheaper multi-level cage whose 4.3 sq ft per level and 7/8 in bars both land below the standards we apply, which is the honest reason it is last here.
- Dimensions
- 31 x 20 x 54 in with the stand, 41.5 in high without it
- Continuous floor
- 31 x 20 = 620 sq in (4.3 sq ft) per level
- Bar spacing
- 7/8 in
- Material
- Powder-coated wire with removable platforms, grille and debris tray
- Included fittings
- Ramps, shelves and a hammock supplied
What it gets right
- Fits a 31 in footprint where the MidWest cages need 36 in
- Hammock, ramps and shelves included
- Removable grille and tray make cleaning straightforward
What it gets wrong
- 620 sq in per level is 28 percent less than the Critter Nation
- 7/8 in bar spacing is close enough to 1 in to carry the same kit risk
- Lighter gauge wire than the MidWest and Savic cages
Who should buy something else
Not for kits, not for two ferrets, and not if you can fit a 36 in cage. It solves a space problem and does nothing else better.

What we would buy
The Critter Nation 162 for almost everyone: two full tiers, half-inch bars, locking ramps, full-width doors, and pans and spares you can replace from a US retailer without importing anything. The Savic Royal Suite 95 if sourcing is easy for you and you want the most floor per tier plus the ability to split the cage in two for an introduction or a sick animal. The Ferret Nation 182 only if every ferret in the house is a grown adult and you have held a one-inch gap against the animal's head. The Prevue 485 only when 36 inches of width will not fit in the room.
What we would not do is buy a cage on its advertised level count. Critter Nation 161 vs 162 is the clearest version of why: it is the same cage, the same bars and the same floor, and the only difference is whether there is a second tier above the first.
