The best chinchilla cages, measured against five feet of height

VCA asks for 3ft x 2ft x 3ft for one chinchilla and 3ft x 2ft x 5ft for a pair. Height is the specification nobody advertises, and it is where almost everything fails.

A chinchilla lounging on a pale chair against a white background

Buy the Savic Royal Suite 95 if you can get one, and the MidWest Critter Nation Double Unit if you cannot. VCA publishes a minimum of 3ft x 2ft x 3ft for a single chinchilla and 3ft x 2ft x 5ft for a pair, and of the five large wire cages we have verified specifications for, the Savic is the only one that is five feet of actual cage — 159cm, with 6.4 square feet per level. The Critter Nation 162 matches the 3ft x 2ft footprint exactly and gives 51 inches of cage height, so it clears the single figure comfortably and lands nine inches short of the pair figure. Everything else here fails on footprint, height or both.

Chinchilla cage minimum · minimum

a minimum of 3ft x 2ft x 3ft for one chinchilla, and 3ft x 2ft x 5ft for a pair

Our conversion: 864 square inches (6 square feet) of footprint, 36in tall for one and 60in tall for two

Issued by VCA Animal Hospitals, read 4 October 2026. The same page asks for multiple levels, rules out galvanized wire because the zinc it contains is toxic if ingested, asks that at least part of a wire floor be covered with a solid material, and sets the environmental temperature at 55-68F and below 80F with humidity under 40-50 percent.

Chinchillas are housed in the cages built for other species, and that is not a shortcut — it is the market. Nobody manufactures a mainstream chinchilla cage at scale. What exists are tall multi-level wire cages sold for ferrets and rats, and MidWest names chinchillas on its own Critter Nation listing alongside rats, sugar gliders, hedgehogs and degus. So a chinchilla cage roundup is an exercise in reading ferret cage specifications against a chinchilla figure, which is the same method we apply on the best rat cages.

What makes this category different from every other one on this site is which specification decides it. For hamsters it is floor area. For ferrets it is bar spacing. For chinchillas it is height, because VCA's pair figure is five feet and retail listings quote cage heights that include a rolling stand. A cage advertised at 63 inches is routinely 51 inches of cage on 12 inches of trolley, and the chinchilla cannot climb the trolley.

The filters, in the order they are applied

  1. 1.Footprint against 3ft x 2ft. That is 864 square inches, or 6 square feet, and it is VCA's figure for a single chinchilla. A cage below it fails regardless of how tall it is.
  2. 2.Cage height, excluding the stand. Three feet for one animal, five feet for a pair. We measure the cage section only, because a stand adds nothing an animal can use.
  3. 3.Multiple levels. VCA asks for them explicitly in the same sentence as the dimensions. A chinchilla is described by VCA as fast and agile and loving to climb and jump, so a single-story cage of the right footprint is still the wrong cage.
  4. 4.No galvanized wire. VCA's wording: do not use galvanized wire, as it contains zinc, which is toxic if ingested. Every cage here is powder-coated steel, so all five pass — but it is the first thing to check on a second-hand or imported cage.
  5. 5.Solid flooring over at least part of any wire. VCA recommends covering at least part of a wire cage floor with Plexiglass, non-treated wood, or other easily-cleaned solid flooring. Deep solid pans satisfy this at the start.

The three that clear the single-chinchilla figure on both footprint and height

All three give at least 6 square feet per level on a 3ft x 2ft or larger footprint, with at least 51 inches of cage above it and two full tiers. Only the Savic reaches the five feet VCA asks for a pair. Full assessments of all five, including the two that fail, are further down.

External dimensions and level counts are each manufacturer's own published figures, read 2026-09-27 and linked on every product card. Floor areas, metric conversions and the cage-section heights for the two MidWest double units are our arithmetic from those dimensions, shown so you can check them. Retail listings quote the MidWest double units at 62.5-63in; that figure includes the rolling stand and is not cage height.

Two things fall out of that table. The first is that the footprint question is nearly settled before you start: three of these five are 36 inches wide and give between 6 and 6.4 square feet per level, which is the same cage repeated. The second is that nothing commonly sold in the United States clears VCA's pair figure. The Savic does, and the Savic is a Belgian cage whose spares are hard to get here. That is an awkward answer and it is the honest one.

What we would do about the five-foot gap

Two chinchillas in a Critter Nation 162 are in a cage that clears the single figure by a wide margin on footprint and falls nine inches short on height. There are three reasonable responses and one unreasonable one.

  • Buy the Savic. It is the only cage here that meets the published pair figure as sold. If sourcing and spares are not a problem for you, this is the clean answer.
  • Buy the Critter Nation 162 and add a third unit. The system stacks. Two units is 130cm of cage; a third takes it past 190cm, which clears the pair figure with a lot to spare. It is the most-space-per-dollar route and it needs a tall room.
  • Buy the Critter Nation 162 and give the pair daily supervised out-of-cage time in a chinchilla-proofed room. This is what most people do, and we are not going to pretend it satisfies a published figure, because it does not.
  • Buy a smaller cage and tell yourself the stand counts. This is the unreasonable one, and it is the single most common mistake in the category, because the listings actively encourage it.

The things no cage listing will tell you

Three requirements sit outside the cage specification and change the shopping list almost as much as the cage does.

  • A 15-inch solid-floored wheel. VCA publishes that figure and separately states that chinchillas require a cage with a wheel. Fifteen inches is larger than every wheel in our hamster wheel assessments, where the largest is 12.8 inches, so we have no verified shortlist for it and are not going to invent one. Buy on the diameter and the solid running surface, and check it fits the cage before you order.
  • A dust bath, and somewhere to put it. VCA asks for a dust box at least 6 x 6 x 9 inches with one to two inches of dust, offered for 10 to 15 minutes daily and then removed, with the dust changed weekly. It is not cage furniture, it is a daily routine, and the removal part matters because dust left in a cage gets used as a toilet.
  • A cool, dry room. VCA puts the optimal environmental temperature at 55-68F (10-20C), below 80F (27C), with humidity under 40-50 percent. That is a cooler and drier room than most houses run, and it rules out a conservatory, a kitchen and anywhere near a radiator. It is the requirement that most often makes a chinchilla the wrong animal for a household.

The assessments

Our pick · Two ferrets that sometimes need separating

Savic Royal Suite 95 Rat and Ferret Cage

The most floor per level of the three big ferret cages and the only one that splits into two separate cages, at 13mm spacing that is functionally the Critter Nation's half-inch.

Clears our threshold6.4 sq ft per level and 13mm bars
Dimensions
95 x 63 x 159 cm (37.4 x 24.8 x 62.6 in)
Continuous floor
95 x 63 cm = 5,985 cm2, about 928 sq in (6.4 sq ft) per level
Bar spacing
13mm (about 1/2 in)
Material
Powder-coated steel with horizontal and vertical mesh, made in Belgium
Levels and configuration
Two levels that can be split into two separate cages

What it gets right

  • 928 sq in per level, more than either MidWest cage
  • 13mm spacing is effectively the half-inch standard
  • Splits into two independent cages, which solves introductions and illness
  • Horizontal bars give climbing purchase that half-inch horizontal mesh usually loses

What it gets wrong

  • Harder to buy in the US than the MidWest cages, and spares are harder still
  • 159cm tall, so the top level is above eye level for many owners
  • Costs more than the Critter Nation

Who should buy something else

Not the sensible pick if you want next-day spares and a replacement pan from a local retailer. That is where the MidWest cages win regardless of specification.

Number 2 · Ferrets of any age, and kits especially

MidWest Critter Nation Double Unit (162)

The half-inch bar spacing is the whole argument: it is the same cage as the Ferret Nation with a gap a ferret kit cannot get its head through.

Clears our threshold6 sq ft per level and 1/2 in bars
Dimensions
36 x 24 x 63 in including the rolling stand
Continuous floor
36 x 24 = 864 sq in (6 sq ft) per level, two levels
Bar spacing
1/2 in horizontal
Material
Powder-coated steel with deep removable plastic pans
Levels and ramps
Two levels with a locking swing-up ramp and full-width doors

What it gets right

  • 1/2 in bar spacing holds a kit that 1 in spacing does not
  • 6 sq ft of usable floor per level, comfortably over our per-level bar
  • Full-width doors mean you can reach every corner, which matters weekly
  • Deep pans contain litter rather than spreading it

What it gets wrong

  • Horizontal half-inch bars give less climbing purchase than wider spacing
  • Heavy and awkward to assemble alone
  • The stand's casters roll on hard floors more than you want them to

Who should buy something else

Not necessary if your ferrets are adults and you have measured their head width against 1 in. The Ferret Nation costs less and climbs better; the half-inch is insurance you may not need.

Number 3 · Adult ferrets that climb

MidWest Ferret Nation Double Unit (182)

Slightly more floor per level than the Critter Nation and a one-inch bar gap, which is fine for a grown ferret and the reason kits escape.

Clears part of itFloor passes; 1 in bars fail our half-inch filter for kits
Dimensions
36 x 25 x 62.5 in including the rolling stand
Continuous floor
36 x 25 = 900 sq in (6.25 sq ft) per level, two levels
Bar spacing
1 in
Material
Powder-coated steel with deep removable plastic pans
Levels and ramps
Two levels with locking swing-up ramps and ramp covers

What it gets right

  • 6.25 sq ft per level, marginally more than the Critter Nation
  • 1 in bars give much better climbing purchase
  • Same full-width doors, deep pans and locking ramps
  • Usually cheaper than the equivalent Critter Nation

What it gets wrong

  • 1 in spacing is the single reason ferret kits get out of this cage
  • No way to retrofit narrower spacing; the fix is a different cage or wire panels

Who should buy something else

Never for kits, and not for a small jill who can flatten her head through a one-inch gap. Measure the animal, not the marketing, and buy the Critter Nation if there is any doubt.

Number 4 · A smaller room and a single adult ferret

Prevue Pet Products Feisty Ferret Home 485

A cheaper multi-level cage whose 4.3 sq ft per level and 7/8 in bars both land below the standards we apply, which is the honest reason it is last here.

Falls below our threshold4.3 sq ft per level and 7/8 in bars
Dimensions
31 x 20 x 54 in with the stand, 41.5 in high without it
Continuous floor
31 x 20 = 620 sq in (4.3 sq ft) per level
Bar spacing
7/8 in
Material
Powder-coated wire with removable platforms, grille and debris tray
Included fittings
Ramps, shelves and a hammock supplied

What it gets right

  • Fits a 31 in footprint where the MidWest cages need 36 in
  • Hammock, ramps and shelves included
  • Removable grille and tray make cleaning straightforward

What it gets wrong

  • 620 sq in per level is 28 percent less than the Critter Nation
  • 7/8 in bar spacing is close enough to 1 in to carry the same kit risk
  • Lighter gauge wire than the MidWest and Savic cages

Who should buy something else

Not for kits, not for two ferrets, and not if you can fit a 36 in cage. It solves a space problem and does nothing else better.

Number 5 · A single ferret, or a first half of a double

MidWest Critter Nation Single Unit (161)

The same 6 sq ft floor and the same half-inch bars in one level, which is the right buy only if you are certain you will add the second unit.

Clears our threshold6 sq ft on one level, 1/2 in bars
Dimensions
36 x 24 x 25.625 in for the cage section
Continuous floor
36 x 24 = 864 sq in (6 sq ft), one level
Bar spacing
1/2 in horizontal
Material
Powder-coated steel with a deep removable plastic pan
Levels and ramps
One level, with a shelf; a second unit stacks on top later

What it gets right

  • Identical 1/2 in bar spacing safety
  • 6 sq ft of usable floor
  • Cheaper entry point, and the 162 upper unit fits it later

What it gets wrong

  • One level gives a ferret much less vertical variety than two
  • Buying the single then upgrading costs more than buying the double outright

Who should buy something else

Wrong for two or more ferrets. One level of 6 sq ft is enough floor and nowhere near enough structure for a pair that will spend their waking hours in it.

What we would buy

The Savic Royal Suite 95 for a pair, because it is the only cage here that meets the published pair figure without modification, gives the most floor per level, and splits into two independent cages — which solves introductions and a sick animal without a second purchase. The cost is sourcing: it ships from Europe and spares are not a next-day proposition.

The Critter Nation 162 for a single chinchilla, and for a pair when the Savic is not realistic. It matches VCA's 3ft x 2ft footprint exactly, gives two full tiers, has full-width doors that let you reach the back corner of a cage you will be cleaning weekly for fifteen to twenty years, and takes a third unit later if you want the height. The Ferret Nation 182 is the same cage with wider bars; for a chinchilla that is not the disqualifier it is for a ferret kit, so buy whichever is cheaper when you order.

Neither of the last two for a chinchilla. The Prevue 485 is 4.3 square feet per level against a 6 square foot figure, and the Critter Nation 161 is 25.6 inches of height against a 36 inch one. How big should a chinchilla cage be works through both figures in full, including what to do with a cage you already own.

Questions people ask

What is the best cage for a chinchilla?
The Savic Royal Suite 95 if you can source it, because it is the only cage we have verified that meets VCA's published pair figure of 3ft x 2ft x 5ft as sold, at 62.6 inches tall with 6.4 square feet per level. For most people in the United States the MidWest Critter Nation Double Unit is the practical answer: it matches the 3ft x 2ft footprint exactly, gives two full tiers, and spares are easy to buy.
Can a chinchilla live in a ferret cage?
Yes, and most chinchillas do. The large multi-level wire cages sold for ferrets and rats are the same cages the chinchilla world buys, and MidWest names chinchillas on its own Critter Nation listing. The specification to check is height rather than bar spacing: a one-inch gap is not the escape risk for a chinchilla that it is for a ferret kit.
How tall should a chinchilla cage be?
VCA publishes three feet for a single chinchilla and five feet for a pair, in each case alongside a 3ft x 2ft footprint and multiple levels. Measure the cage section only: retail listings for the MidWest double units quote 62.5 to 63 inches, but around 12 inches of that is the rolling stand, which a chinchilla cannot use.
Is galvanized wire safe for a chinchilla cage?
No. VCA states directly that galvanized wire should not be used because it contains zinc, which is toxic if ingested, and a chinchilla chews bars. Every cage on this page is powder-coated steel. Galvanized wire turns up on second-hand cages, aviary conversions and cheap imports, so it is the first thing to check before buying used.
What size wheel does a chinchilla need?
VCA publishes 15 inches in diameter with solid flooring, and separately states that chinchillas require a cage with a wheel. That is larger than every wheel we have assessed — our hamster wheel roundup tops out at 12.8 inches — so we carry no shortlist for it. Buy on diameter and a solid running surface, and check the clearance inside your cage first.
Do chinchillas need a wire or solid cage floor?
At least partly solid. VCA recommends covering at least part of a wire cage floor with Plexiglass, non-treated wood or other easily-cleaned solid flooring. The deep removable plastic pans on the MidWest and Savic cages satisfy that from the start, which is one practical reason they rank where they do.
