Outdoor housing is judged on different criteria from indoor. Floor area still matters and is covered in rabbit hutch size; what is specific to outdoors is that the enclosure has to survive weather, keep a predator out, and give the animal something safe to stand on when the ground is wet.

The three outdoor criteria

Weather

A single-skin timber hutch in a wet, windy winter is a cold damp box. What separates products here is roof design, whether the structure is raised off wet ground, and whether the shell has any insulation at all.

Asphalt-felted pitched roofs shed rain properly; a flat or shallow roof pools. Raised legs keep the floor off saturated ground, which matters more than almost any other hutch feature. Predator resistance

This is where the category is weakest, and not because the products are flimsy. It is because the specifications are not published. Of the four timber hutches we assessed, none publishes a mesh aperture or a wire gauge, and Omlet publishes the mesh construction — double-layer fully coated steel weld mesh — without a gauge figure.

A fox does not test a hutch's overall sturdiness. It tests the mesh, the staples holding the mesh, the latch, and the ground under the wall. So a product that does not publish its mesh specification is a product whose most important outdoor property you cannot assess before buying. Each product is scored on the five specifications that matter in predator-proof rabbit hutches.

Flooring

We cite the guinea pig guidance here because it is the clearest published statement on the point and it applies to rabbits for the same reason: wire floors cause sore hocks. What we would buy, by situation

• Mild climate, budget no object: Eglu Go Hutch with enough run extensions to clear 64.5 square feet. Lowest maintenance and longest life of anything here.
• Mild climate, value: a timber shelter inside four joined exercise pens, with a roof and a dug-in mesh skirt. Most floor per pound by a wide margin.
• Cold winter: TRIXIE Natura insulated shelter in the same pen arrangement. The insulation earns its cost where winters are genuinely cold and nowhere else.
• Fox country: whichever shelter you choose, the security work is on the enclosure rather than the hutch — buried mesh skirt, weld mesh rather than stapled wire, and a two-action latch. Predator-proof hutches.

One point that applies to every product here. Rabbits are more at risk from heat than cold: a hutch in full summer sun is a more urgent problem than the same hutch in January, and rabbits cannot pant effectively. Site for shade first, then draft, then everything else — see cage placement.
