Why the Kavee 4x2 wins

10.6 square feet against a preferred figure of 10.5. It clears it by a whisker, and it is the smallest cage that does. Nothing purpose-built at a comparable price gets there.

13.8-inch walls, above the published 12-inch minimum, on a solid corrugated-polypropylene base — which is exactly the solid, washable, non-wire floor the guidance asks for.

It is modular. A 4x2 becomes a 5x2 or a 6x2 by adding grids and a longer base, rather than by buying another cage. Given that guinea pig households tend to acquire a third animal rather than lose one, this is the property that matters most over five years. The C&C cage guide explains the system.

Its honest weaknesses: the open top makes it unsuitable in a house with a cat or dog unless you add a lid; the correx base creases at the corners and eventually needs replacing; and the grid apertures are wide enough that a very young guinea pig can get through the lower row.

Why the MidWest Habitat Plus is the answer for some households

7.8 square feet clears the 7.5 minimum for two and misses the 10.5 preferred figure by 2.7 square feet, so on area alone it loses. It wins on two things the Kavee cannot offer.

A removable wire mesh top. In a household with a cat, an open-topped pen is not housing, whatever its footprint. This is not a nice-to-have and it is the reason this cage exists.

A divider panel with lock-in-place ramps. Separating two guinea pigs — for an introduction, an illness, or a boar pair that has fallen out — otherwise means a second cage. This gives you one in the same footprint.

Its PVC-lined canvas bottom is solid and washable, which satisfies the flooring rule, and 14-inch sides clear the height figure. The canvas does absorb urine at the seams over time, and expanding it means buying another whole unit rather than another grid.

The 6x2, and when to skip straight to it

About 15.8 square feet, which clears the preferred figure for four guinea pigs. If you have the wall space — nearly seven feet — this is the size at which a pair stops turning and starts using the far end, and it is what we would buy given the room.

Measure the wall first. A 6x2 that does not fit becomes a 4x2 with spare grids, which is an expensive route to a 4x2. And a correx base that long flexes, so it needs support along its length.

Outdoors

The Omlet Eglu Go Guinea Pig Hutch is the only outdoor option here worth considering, and it is a different proposition: twin-wall polyethylene that handles weather properly, a coated steel weld-mesh run, and a solid shelter floor. It needs a run extension to clear the preferred area for a pair, and it costs several times a C&C cage of the same area.

The bigger point about outdoors is that band. 17-20C ideal, indoors below 15C, heatstroke above 26C is a demanding specification in most climates, and it is the main argument for keeping guinea pigs indoors where the room does the work. If they are outside, the same winter measures apply as for rabbits — protecting an outdoor hutch in winter.
