Guinea pigs

The best guinea pig cage for three

There is a published figure for three guinea pigs, and the most widely sold purpose-built habitat provides 60 percent of it.

Three guinea pigs of different colors eating a lettuce leaf on hay bedding

A 6x2 modular C&C cage. At roughly 82 by 27.6 inches it gives about 15.8 square feet, which is the only product on this site that clears the 13 square feet Humane World for Animals states as preferred for three guinea pigs. A 4x2 at 10.6 square feet clears the published minimum for three and nothing more. The most widely sold purpose-built guinea pig habitat gives 7.8 square feet, which is under the minimum for three animals, and we are not going to recommend it for three however good the rest of it is.

Guinea pig cage minimum · minimum

7.5 sq ft (about 30in x 36in) bare minimum for one; 7.5 sq ft minimum for two, with at least 10.5 sq ft (30in x 50in) preferred

Issued by Humane World for Animals, read 27 September 2026. The same guidance sets 10.5 sq ft minimum and 13 sq ft preferred for three, and 13 sq ft minimum with 30in x 76in preferred for four.

Guinea pig housing is the easiest category on this site to shop in, because Humane World for Animals publishes a figure for one animal, for two, for three and for four, and splits each into a bare minimum and a preferred area. Almost nobody quotes the three-animal row, which is a pity, because it is the row where the category stops working.

For three guinea pigs the published figures are 10.5 square feet as a minimum and at least 13 square feet, stated as 30 by 62 inches, as preferred. We recommend the preferred figure for the same reason we do on the cage size pillar: a minimum is set to prevent the worst outcome, not to produce a good one, and three guinea pigs is already a group that needs somewhere for the lowest-ranking animal to go.

Humane World's figures for three guinea pigs are 10.5 sq ft minimum and at least 13 sq ft (30 x 62in) preferred, read from its published housing requirements on 4 October 2026. Cage dimensions are each manufacturer's own, read on 27 September 2026 and linked on each product card. The square-foot conversions are our arithmetic, shown so you can redo them.

That is an unusually clean result and worth saying plainly: of the four enclosures this site assesses for guinea pigs, exactly one is large enough for three animals at the preferred figure, and it is a bag of grids and connectors rather than a product with a box.

The three to choose between

The only one that clears the preferred area for three, the one that clears the minimum, and the lidded habitat that does not clear either but is on the shortlist for one specific reason. Full assessments below.

Why modular wins this particular question

On the general guinea pig cage roundup, modular C&C and shop-bought habitats are a genuine trade: the habitat ships with a mesh lid and a divider, which the open-topped grid cage does not, and a lid is not a luxury in a house with a cat.

At three animals that trade collapses, because the habitat is no longer in the running on area. 7.8 square feet is below the published minimum for three, so the comparison is not between a lidded cage and an open one; it is between an adequate cage and an inadequate one. Modular cages are also the only format where adding a third animal costs two grids rather than a new product, which is the structural reason the format wins here — you extend the cage rather than replace it.

If a lid is non-negotiable, the answer is a grid lid on the modular cage rather than a smaller habitat. Our C&C cage guide covers lids, bases and what to buy, and C&C against pet-store cages works through the broader comparison.

What three animals change that area does not capture

  • Hides have to outnumber the animals. Two guinea pigs can share a tunnel. Three cannot all leave at once if there is one exit, and the one that gets cornered is the one that stops eating. Four hides for three animals, each with two ways out.
  • Two water bottles and two hay piles, at opposite ends. Resource guarding is the usual cause of trouble in a trio, and it is solved with geography rather than with discipline.
  • Sex composition matters more than it does with a pair. Three is the group size where a sow introduced to two boars, or a trio of unneutered boars, most often goes wrong. That is a social question rather than a housing one and we are not qualified to advise on it beyond saying it is the real variable.
  • Bedding volume rises faster than floor area. 15.8 square feet at the 2 to 3 inches of paper bedding Humane World recommends is a lot of bedding per change, which is why fleece liners become the economic option at this cage size. How often to clean a guinea pig cage covers the cadence and the cost.

Our pick · Three or four guinea pigs, or a pair with real running room

Kavee 6x2 C&C Cage for Guinea Pigs

About 15.8 sq ft, which is the size at which a pair stops pacing and starts using the far end, and the size we would buy if the wall allows it.

Clears our thresholdAbout 15.8 sq ft, well over the preferred figures
Dimensions
Six grids by two, roughly 82 x 27.6 in of base
Continuous floor
About 15.8 sq ft, by extending the verified 4x2 base by two grids
Bar spacing
Powder-coated steel grids, 9 x 9 grid apertures
Material
Powder-coated steel grids, ABS connectors, corrugated polypropylene base
Wall height
13.8 in, as on the 4x2

What it gets right

  • About 15.8 sq ft clears the 13 sq ft preferred figure for four guinea pigs
  • Same solid base, same 13.8 in walls, same modularity
  • Long enough that guinea pigs actually run rather than turn

What it gets wrong

  • Needs nearly seven feet of wall, which most rooms do not have spare
  • Open top, same predator caveat as the 4x2
  • A single correx base this long flexes and needs support along its length

Who should buy something else

Not for a small room. Measure the wall before you buy: a 6x2 that does not fit becomes a 4x2 with spare grids, which is an expensive way to get there.

Number 2 · A pair of guinea pigs, indoors

Kavee 4x2 C&C Cage for Guinea Pigs

10.6 sq ft in one unbroken block clears the preferred figure for a pair rather than the bare minimum, which no pet-store guinea pig cage does at any price.

Clears our threshold10.6 sq ft against the 10.5 sq ft preferred figure
Dimensions
55.1 x 27.6 x 13.8 in (1.40 x 0.70 x 0.35 m) without a stand
Continuous floor
55.1 x 27.6 = 1,521 sq in, about 10.6 sq ft
Bar spacing
Powder-coated steel grids, 9 x 9 grid apertures
Material
Powder-coated steel grids, ABS connectors, corrugated polypropylene base
Wall height
13.8 in, above the 12 in minimum published for guinea pigs

What it gets right

  • 10.6 sq ft clears the 10.5 sq ft preferred area for two guinea pigs
  • 13.8 in walls clear the published 12 in minimum
  • Solid correx base, not wire, which the published guidance requires
  • Modular, so a 5x2 or 6x2 is an upgrade rather than a replacement

What it gets wrong

  • Open top, so it is not cat-safe or child-proof without a lid
  • Correx base creases at the corners and eventually needs replacing
  • Grid apertures are wide enough that a baby guinea pig can get through the lower row

Who should buy something else

Not for a household with a cat or a dog unless you add a lid. An open-topped pen in a room with a predator in it is not housing, whatever its footprint.

Number 3 · A pair in a house with a cat, or two pigs that need separating

MidWest Guinea Habitat Plus

7.8 sq ft clears the bare minimum for a pair and misses the preferred figure, but it is the only cage here that ships with both a lid and a divider.

Clears part of it7.8 sq ft clears the 7.5 sq ft minimum, misses 10.5 sq ft preferred
Dimensions
47 x 24 x 14 in; manufacturer states 8 sq ft of living space
Continuous floor
47 x 24 = 1,128 sq in, about 7.8 sq ft
Bar spacing
Wire mesh top; side panels are solid-framed mesh
Material
Wire frame with a washable PVC-lined canvas bottom
Wall height and lid
14 in sides with a removable wire mesh top

What it gets right

  • Removable wire mesh top, so it is safe in a room with another pet
  • Divider panel with lock-in-place ramps separates two animals when needed
  • 14 in sides clear the 12 in minimum
  • PVC-lined canvas bottom is solid, washable and kinder to feet than wire

What it gets wrong

  • 7.8 sq ft is under the 10.5 sq ft preferred figure for two
  • Canvas bottom absorbs urine at the seams over time
  • Expanding it means buying another whole unit, not another grid

Who should buy something else

Not the choice if floor area is your only criterion. A Kavee 4x2 gives 2.8 sq ft more for a similar spend, provided you do not need the lid.

Number 4 · Outdoor guinea pigs in a climate with real weather

Omlet Eglu Go Guinea Pig Hutch

The only mainstream guinea pig housing that solves the outdoor weather problem properly, sold at a footprint that needs a run extension to reach the preferred figure.

Clears part of itNeeds a run extension for a pair
Dimensions
Sold with a 6ft run; shelter dimensions match the Eglu Go pattern
Continuous floor
6ft run plus shelter; under the 10.5 sq ft preferred figure once the shelter is excluded
Bar spacing
Double-layer fully coated steel weld mesh; gauge not published
Material
UV-stabilized twin-wall polyethylene with a coated steel run
Weather performance
Twin-wall insulation; draft-free ventilation

What it gets right

  • Twin-wall polyethylene shelter is warm in winter and hoses clean
  • Coated weld mesh run, not stapled chicken wire
  • Solid floor in the shelter, which the published guidance requires

What it gets wrong

  • Needs a run extension to clear the 10.5 sq ft preferred figure for a pair
  • Run mesh gauge not published
  • Costs several times a C&C cage of the same area

Who should buy something else

Not the value choice for indoor guinea pigs. Indoors, a C&C cage buys two or three times the floor for the same money, and the weather features earn nothing.

What we would buy for three guinea pigs

The 6x2 modular cage. It is the only enclosure here that clears the preferred figure, it clears it by half as much again rather than by a whisker, and it costs less per square foot than anything purpose-built. Add a grid lid if there are cats or children in the house.

The 4x2 only if 82 inches of wall does not exist in your room. It clears the published minimum for three and we would be honest that it is a minimum: three animals in 10.6 square feet is the same area Humane World describes as preferred for two.

The Eglu Go only if the animals live outdoors, and then only with the run extension, because the figure to clear is the combined shelter and run rather than the shelter. The weather case for it is real and is covered on the guinea pig cage roundup; the area case for three animals is not.

Questions people ask

What size cage do 3 guinea pigs need?
Humane World for Animals publishes 10.5 square feet as the minimum for three guinea pigs and at least 13 square feet, stated as 30 by 62 inches, as preferred. We recommend buying to the preferred figure, which in practice means a 6x2 modular C&C cage at about 15.8 square feet.
What is the best guinea pig cage for 3?
A 6x2 modular C&C cage. At roughly 82 by 27.6 inches it is the only enclosure we assess that clears the 13 square foot preferred figure for three animals, and extending it later costs two grids rather than a new cage.
Is a 4x2 C&C cage big enough for 3 guinea pigs?
It clears the published minimum and nothing more. At 10.6 square feet it is 0.1 square feet over the 10.5 square foot minimum for three, and 2.4 square feet under the preferred figure. It is the same area Humane World describes as preferred for two animals.
Can 3 guinea pigs live in a MidWest Guinea Habitat?
No. At 47 by 24 inches it gives about 7.8 square feet, which is below the 10.5 square foot published minimum for three. It clears the minimum for two and misses the preferred figure for two, which is where it belongs on our shortlists.
How many hides do 3 guinea pigs need?
More hides than animals, so four for three, each with at least two exits. A trio has a lowest-ranking animal in a way a pair often does not, and a single-exit hide is where that animal gets cornered.
Do three guinea pigs need a bigger cage than two?
Yes, and the published figures say so directly: 7.5 square feet minimum and 10.5 preferred for two, against 10.5 minimum and 13 preferred for three. The preferred area for two is the bare minimum for three, which is the single most useful thing in the Humane World table.
