Guinea pigs

The best guinea pig cages for 4 guinea pigs

At four animals the published figure is 13 square feet, and the commercial cage market simply stops. One product clears it, and it is not a cage in the usual sense.

Several guinea pigs feeding together in a large open enclosure

Buy a 6x2 C&C cage — the Kavee version is the one we assess. For four guinea pigs, Humane World for Animals publishes a minimum of 13 square feet with 30 x 76in preferred, and 30 x 76in is 2,280 square inches. The Kavee 6x2 base works out at about 2,275 square inches, which lands within five square inches of the published preferred figure. Nothing else comes close: the largest conventional cage we assess, the MidWest Guinea Habitat Plus, gives 7.8 square feet, which is 60 percent of the four-pig minimum and would need two units joined together. So the honest answer to this question is that four guinea pigs are not housed in a cage you buy off a shelf — they are housed in a grid system you size to the figure, and the 6x2 is the size that figure describes.

Guinea pig cage minimum · minimum

7.5 sq ft (about 30in x 36in) bare minimum for one; 7.5 sq ft minimum for two, with at least 10.5 sq ft (30in x 50in) preferred

Issued by Humane World for Animals, read 27 September 2026. The same guidance sets 10.5 sq ft minimum and 13 sq ft preferred for three, and 13 sq ft minimum with 30in x 76in preferred for four.

Guinea pigs have the most actionable published housing guidance of any species on this site. Humane World for Animals gives a figure for one animal, for two, for three and for four, splits each into a bare minimum and a preferred area, sets a wall height and rules out three flooring types by name. Here is the whole ladder, because seeing it in one place is what makes the four-pig answer obvious.

Figures as published by Humane World for Animals, linked below. The square-inch column is our arithmetic on their dimensions. Note that the four-pig preferred figure is given as dimensions rather than an area, which is why we have converted it rather than quoting a square footage.

Read the jump from three to four. The minimum goes from 10.5 square feet to 13, and the preferred figure stops being a square footage and becomes a specific 30 by 76 inch footprint — six foot four inches long. That is longer than most dining tables, and it is the point at which the guinea pig cage market, which already struggles at two animals, has nothing to offer at all.

Dimensions are each manufacturer's published figures, read 2026-09-27 and linked on every product card below. The Kavee 6x2 area is derived by extending the verified 4x2 base by two grids, which is our arithmetic rather than a manufacturer figure. The percentage columns are ours.

Three of the four fail, and we are leaving them on the page rather than publishing a one-item list, because the question people actually have is whether the cage they already own can take a fourth pig. The answer for a 4x2 and for a Guinea Habitat Plus is no, not on its own — and both have a sensible route to yes, which is the next section.

The three worth considering for a herd of four

The 6x2 grid cage that lands on the published preferred figure almost exactly, the 4x2 that gets you to a compliant setup if you add a second level or a connected run, and the conventional cage that only works for four if you buy two and join them. Full assessments of all four are further down.

Getting to 13 square feet from a cage you already own

  • Add two grids. If you have a Kavee or any 4x2 grid cage, four more grids and a longer base turn it into a 6x2. This is by far the cheapest route to the figure and the reason we recommend grid systems for any herd. The C&C cage guide covers the build.
  • Join two Guinea Habitat Plus units. Two at 7.8 square feet each is 15.6, which clears 13. The join is the weak point: you need the two to be flush with no gap a foot can go down, and the mesh tops have to meet.
  • Add a connected run. A permanently attached pen counts as floor if the pigs can reach it unsupervised. If it is only open when you are watching, it is exercise rather than housing, and the cage still has to meet the figure on its own.
  • Do not add a second level and count it. Humane World for Animals' figures are floor-area figures. A ramp and an upper shelf add enrichment and they do not add floor, which is the same position the rabbit guidance takes explicitly.

Wall height, flooring and the three rule-outs

Space is the headline figure but it is not the only one Humane World for Animals publishes. It asks for walls at least 12 inches high, and it states that plastic tubs, glass aquariums and cages with wire floors are not acceptable. All three of those rule-outs matter more in a four-pig setup than in a pair, because the enclosures people improvise at that size are exactly the ones on that list.

Guinea pig flooring · minimum

plastic tubs, glass aquariums and cages with wire floors are stated to be not acceptable

Issued by Humane World for Animals, read 27 September 2026.

The Kavee grids stand 13.8 inches, which clears the height figure. The Guinea Habitat Plus has 14-inch sides. A paddling pool, a plastic storage tub and a 100-gallon aquarium — all three of which get recommended for herds in guinea pig groups — are ruled out by the flooring and enclosure guidance rather than by their size. Guinea pig cage size covers the full set of published figures.

What four pigs costs you weekly

This is the part nobody plans for and the reason some four-pig setups fail. Four guinea pigs eat four guinea pigs' worth of hay — hay is the bulk of the diet, available at all times — and they soil 15.8 square feet of floor rather than 10.6. The RSPCA asks for a deep clean at least once a week with spot cleaning carried out daily, and qualifies it twice: how deep a clean depends on the size of the accommodation and the number of guinea pigs.

Guinea pig cage cleaning frequency · recommendation

deep cleaned at least once a week, with spot cleaning carried out daily

Issued by RSPCA, read 4 October 2026. The RSPCA qualifies the figure twice: how deep a clean is needed depends on the size of the accommodation and the number of guinea pigs, and the cage should be cleaned often but not so often that the animals are frequently disturbed. The same page names dust-free hay and dry, dust-free, absorbent wood shavings as suitable, and rules out softwood such as pine, cotton wool and fluffy bedding, and coarse materials like straw.

In practice a 6x2 run on fleece needs the liner changed more often than a 4x2 does, which is the argument for owning two liners rather than one. The best guinea pig cage liners covers the options, Kavee vs GuineaDad compares the two brands people actually choose between, and how often to clean a guinea pig cage works the routine through at each herd size.

The assessments

Our pick · Three or four guinea pigs, or a pair with real running room

Kavee 6x2 C&C Cage for Guinea Pigs

About 15.8 sq ft, which is the size at which a pair stops pacing and starts using the far end, and the size we would buy if the wall allows it.

Clears our thresholdAbout 15.8 sq ft, well over the preferred figures
Dimensions
Six grids by two, roughly 82 x 27.6 in of base
Continuous floor
About 15.8 sq ft, by extending the verified 4x2 base by two grids
Bar spacing
Powder-coated steel grids, 9 x 9 grid apertures
Material
Powder-coated steel grids, ABS connectors, corrugated polypropylene base
Wall height
13.8 in, as on the 4x2

What it gets right

  • About 15.8 sq ft clears the 13 sq ft preferred figure for four guinea pigs
  • Same solid base, same 13.8 in walls, same modularity
  • Long enough that guinea pigs actually run rather than turn

What it gets wrong

  • Needs nearly seven feet of wall, which most rooms do not have spare
  • Open top, same predator caveat as the 4x2
  • A single correx base this long flexes and needs support along its length

Who should buy something else

Not for a small room. Measure the wall before you buy: a 6x2 that does not fit becomes a 4x2 with spare grids, which is an expensive way to get there.

Number 2 · A pair of guinea pigs, indoors

Kavee 4x2 C&C Cage for Guinea Pigs

10.6 sq ft in one unbroken block clears the preferred figure for a pair rather than the bare minimum, which no pet-store guinea pig cage does at any price.

Clears our threshold10.6 sq ft against the 10.5 sq ft preferred figure
Dimensions
55.1 x 27.6 x 13.8 in (1.40 x 0.70 x 0.35 m) without a stand
Continuous floor
55.1 x 27.6 = 1,521 sq in, about 10.6 sq ft
Bar spacing
Powder-coated steel grids, 9 x 9 grid apertures
Material
Powder-coated steel grids, ABS connectors, corrugated polypropylene base
Wall height
13.8 in, above the 12 in minimum published for guinea pigs

What it gets right

  • 10.6 sq ft clears the 10.5 sq ft preferred area for two guinea pigs
  • 13.8 in walls clear the published 12 in minimum
  • Solid correx base, not wire, which the published guidance requires
  • Modular, so a 5x2 or 6x2 is an upgrade rather than a replacement

What it gets wrong

  • Open top, so it is not cat-safe or child-proof without a lid
  • Correx base creases at the corners and eventually needs replacing
  • Grid apertures are wide enough that a baby guinea pig can get through the lower row

Who should buy something else

Not for a household with a cat or a dog unless you add a lid. An open-topped pen in a room with a predator in it is not housing, whatever its footprint.

Number 3 · A pair in a house with a cat, or two pigs that need separating

MidWest Guinea Habitat Plus

7.8 sq ft clears the bare minimum for a pair and misses the preferred figure, but it is the only cage here that ships with both a lid and a divider.

Clears part of it7.8 sq ft clears the 7.5 sq ft minimum, misses 10.5 sq ft preferred
Dimensions
47 x 24 x 14 in; manufacturer states 8 sq ft of living space
Continuous floor
47 x 24 = 1,128 sq in, about 7.8 sq ft
Bar spacing
Wire mesh top; side panels are solid-framed mesh
Material
Wire frame with a washable PVC-lined canvas bottom
Wall height and lid
14 in sides with a removable wire mesh top

What it gets right

  • Removable wire mesh top, so it is safe in a room with another pet
  • Divider panel with lock-in-place ramps separates two animals when needed
  • 14 in sides clear the 12 in minimum
  • PVC-lined canvas bottom is solid, washable and kinder to feet than wire

What it gets wrong

  • 7.8 sq ft is under the 10.5 sq ft preferred figure for two
  • Canvas bottom absorbs urine at the seams over time
  • Expanding it means buying another whole unit, not another grid

Who should buy something else

Not the choice if floor area is your only criterion. A Kavee 4x2 gives 2.8 sq ft more for a similar spend, provided you do not need the lid.

Number 4 · Outdoor guinea pigs in a climate with real weather

Omlet Eglu Go Guinea Pig Hutch

The only mainstream guinea pig housing that solves the outdoor weather problem properly, sold at a footprint that needs a run extension to reach the preferred figure.

Clears part of itNeeds a run extension for a pair

Double-layer fully coated steel weld mesh; gauge not published
Material
UV-stabilized twin-wall polyethylene with a coated steel run
Weather performance
Twin-wall insulation; draft-free ventilation

What it gets right

  • Twin-wall polyethylene shelter is warm in winter and hoses clean
  • Coated weld mesh run, not stapled chicken wire
  • Solid floor in the shelter, which the published guidance requires

What it gets wrong

  • Needs a run extension to clear the 10.5 sq ft preferred figure for a pair
  • Run mesh gauge not published
  • Costs several times a C&C cage of the same area

Who should buy something else

Not the value choice for indoor guinea pigs. Indoors, a C&C cage buys two or three times the floor for the same money, and the weather features earn nothing.

What we would buy

A 6x2 grid cage, two fleece liners so one is always clean, four hides, two hay piles and two water bottles at opposite ends. That setup lands on the published preferred figure for four pigs almost exactly, it can be extended by two more grids if the herd grows again, and it is the only configuration on this page we would call unambiguously compliant for four animals without a second purchase or a construction project.

Questions people ask

What size cage do 4 guinea pigs need?
Humane World for Animals publishes a minimum of 13 square feet for four guinea pigs, with 30 x 76in preferred. 30 x 76in is 2,280 square inches, which is a footprint six foot four inches long — longer than almost any commercial guinea pig cage sold.
What is the best cage for 4 guinea pigs?
A 6x2 C&C grid cage. The Kavee 6x2 base works out at about 2,275 square inches, which is within roughly five square inches of the 30 x 76in preferred figure for four pigs. No conventional cage we assess gets close: the largest gives 7.8 square feet against a 13 square foot minimum.
Can 4 guinea pigs live in a 4x2 cage?
No. A 4x2 is about 10.6 square feet, which is under the 13 square foot minimum for four animals — it is the figure for three. Adding two grids to make it a 6x2 is the cheapest fix and gets you to about 15.8 square feet.
Does a second level count towards the space for four guinea pigs?
No. The published figures are floor-area figures. An upper shelf and a ramp add useful enrichment but they do not add floor, so a two-level 4x2 is still a 4x2 for the purposes of the 13 square foot minimum.
Can I join two cages for four guinea pigs?
Yes, and two MidWest Guinea Habitat Plus units at 7.8 square feet each come to 15.6, which clears the minimum. The thing to get right is the join: no gap a foot can go down, and the mesh tops meeting so there is no escape route at the seam.
Is an aquarium or a storage tub acceptable for a guinea pig herd?
No. Humane World for Animals states that plastic tubs, glass aquariums and cages with wire floors are not acceptable, regardless of size. That rules out the large-tub and paddling-pool setups that get suggested for herds.
