The hamster cages that clear 775 square inches

Of the ten enclosures we assessed, three clear the 775 square inch published minimum on continuous floor: the BUCATSTATE 3.0 at 47 inches (1,109 sq in), the Niteangel Vista Large (1,069 sq in) and an IKEA DETOLF laid on its back (1,086 sq in). The Niteangel Vista Medium clears it at 924 sq in. Everything else on this page, including every cage sold in a pet shop, falls short — and the table says by how much.

We are going to lead with the finding rather than the products, because the finding is the useful part. The hamster cage market divides almost perfectly into two groups, and the line between them is not price or brand. It is whether the product was designed against a published welfare figure or designed to sit on a shelf in a pet shop.

Cages in the second group cluster between 230 and 620 square inches. Enclosures in the first cluster between 920 and 1,110. There is almost nothing in between, and the gap is not gradual. Which means the choice you are making is not really which hamster cage to buy — it is which side of that line to buy on.

The criteria, before the picks

Four specifications decided this list, applied in this order. The order is the whole method: a cage cannot buy its way past the first filter by being excellent at the fourth.

1. 1.Continuous floor area against 775 square inches. Measured from the base interior where the manufacturer publishes it, from the external footprint where it does not, with the source linked in each assessment. This is arithmetic, not judgment.
2. 2.Bar spacing, or whether bars exist at all. For a dwarf hamster this is the difference between a cage and an open door. Published figures only — see hamster cage bar spacing.
3. 3.Whether the enclosure can hold ten inches of bedding, which is PDSA's figure, and whether it can take a 12-inch wheel for a Syrian. Both are physical constraints, and both are routinely failed by cages that look large.
4. 4.Material and cleaning access. Last. A cage that is a pleasure to clean and 40 percent too small is still 40 percent too small.

Every enclosure, side by side

Two rows in that table deserve pointing at. The BUCATSTATE 3.0 at 39 inches lands on 774 square inches, one square inch under the minimum — which is a coincidence rather than a conspiracy, but it makes the point that a cage can be built to look like it clears a figure without clearing it. And the Savic Hamster Heaven Metro, which is genuinely the best-built wire cage in the category, is 155 square inches short. Build quality and floor area are independent variables, and the market prices the first one.

Why cages that fail are still on this list

It would be tidier to list three products and stop. We include the five that fall short for two reasons. The first is that they are what most buyers are actually looking at, and a page that pretends the Savic and the Prevue do not exist is less useful than one that says exactly where each sits. The second is that some of them solve a real problem: the Prevue 528 has the tightest published bar spacing of any mainstream wire cage at 3/8 inch, which genuinely matters for a dwarf hamster, and saying so is more honest than omitting it because its floor is inadequate.

What we will not do is describe any of them as a good primary enclosure. A cage at 62 percent of a published minimum is not a compromise, it is a shortfall, and the assessments below say so in each case.

How to choose between the three that pass

All three clear the floor-area figure comfortably, so the decision is about material and about how you clean.

Our order: the BUCATSTATE first, because it is the only one combining the largest floor with a wipe-clean material and a stated 11-inch bedding depth. The Vista second, because it is the nicest object of the three and the MDF is a real but manageable caveat. The DETOLF third only because of the lid, which is a genuine piece of work rather than an afternoon's inconvenience — but on floor-area-per-dollar nothing else is close.

If none of the three suits you, the honest fourth option is not a smaller cage. It is a converted storage tub, which clears the threshold for less than any of them and needs about an hour with a drill.

Buying for a specific hamster

Species changes the bar spacing answer and the wheel answer, not the floor-area answer. If you are buying for one specifically, we have split those out: best cages for a Syrian hamster, where wheel clearance is the binding constraint, and best cages for a dwarf hamster, where bar spacing is. Both start from the same 775 square inch figure.
