Best cages for a Syrian hamster

For a Syrian hamster, buy an enclosure with at least 775 square inches of continuous floor and enough internal height and width to take a 12-inch solid-surface wheel, which PDSA publishes as the Syrian minimum. That combination rules out more products than the floor-area figure does alone: several enclosures clear the floor and cannot physically hold a compliant wheel.

Syrians are the hamster most people have and the hamster most cages are sold for, which is odd given that they are the species least well served by the cages on sale. A Syrian is roughly twice the body length of a Roborovski and needs a wheel half again as large, in an enclosure of the same published minimum floor area. The geometry is tight, and it is the geometry rather than the floor area that eliminates products here.

The two figures that have to be satisfied at once

Floor area first, because it is the same figure for every hamster and it is covered in full on our hamster cage size page: 775 square inches of continuous floor, from PDSA's 100 x 50cm.

Then the wheel. PDSA publishes at least 30cm — twelve inches — with a solid running surface, explicitly not slats or bars. The San Diego Humane Society publishes 10 to 12 inches for Syrians, so the two disagree at the bottom of the range and we take the stricter figure. A 12-inch wheel on a stand needs roughly 13 inches of internal height and about 13 by 6 inches of floor.

Put those together and the constraint becomes concrete. An enclosure 20 inches tall with 10 inches of substrate in it has 10 inches of clear height, which will not take a 12-inch wheel. This is the trap in the acrylic-box category: several of them clear the floor-area figure and then cannot hold a compliant wheel once the bedding is at the depth PDSA also asks for.

Bar spacing barely matters here, and that is worth knowing

A full-grown Syrian will not get through half-inch bars, and in practice will not get through the 9.5mm spacing on a Savic either. This is the one respect in which buying for a Syrian is easier than buying for a dwarf: you can consider wire cages that a dwarf owner cannot. See bar spacing for the figures by species.

What replaces it as the secondary concern is chewing. Syrians are strong enough to work at a cage edge persistently, which is why the material column in the table above matters more than it does for a dwarf, and why an MDF enclosure needs its interior base sealed or lined.

What we would buy for a Syrian

The BUCATSTATE 3.0 at 47 inches, on the arithmetic. It is the only enclosure on this list that clears the floor figure, states a bedding depth above PDSA's ten inches, and leaves about fifteen inches of clear height for a compliant wheel. The Niteangel Vista Large does the same job in a nicer object with a material caveat.

If budget is the binding constraint, a DETOLF or a converted storage tub both clear the floor figure for much less, and you solve the wheel geometry with a graded bedding depth. That is a real solution, not a fudge — plenty of well-run Syrian setups work exactly that way — but it is a build rather than a purchase, and you should know that going in.

For the wheel itself, only two options we assessed clear the 12-inch figure with a solid surface: the Niteangel Super-Silent at 12.8 inches and the Trixie wood and cork wheel at 31.4cm internal. Both are in the safest hamster wheels.
