Best cages for a dwarf hamster
Same floor-area figure, different binding constraint. For a dwarf, the specification that decides everything is the gap between the bars.
For a dwarf hamster, buy an enclosure with at least 775 square inches of continuous floor and either no bars at all or a published bar spacing of 3/8 inch (9.5mm) or less. Half-inch bars will hold an adult Syrian and will not reliably hold a Roborovski or a young Campbell's. Solid-walled enclosures sidestep the question entirely, which is why they dominate this list.
The floor-area figure does not change by species. PDSA publishes 100 x 50cm for hamsters, full stop, and we use it that way for reasons set out on our dwarf hamster cage size page — chiefly that a dwarf covers a comparable running distance overnight to a Syrian and that a species-split figure hands the smaller animal the smaller cage.
What does change is containment. A Roborovski is small enough and determined enough to get through a gap an owner would look at and call safe, and a dwarf that escapes into a room is in serious danger in a way a Syrian usually is not, because it is harder to find and harder to catch.

Why solid-walled enclosures win here
The two cages with genuinely tight published spacing — the Prevue 528 and the Savic Metro — are 480 and 620 square inches respectively, so both fail the floor-area figure. The enclosures that clear the floor figure are solid-walled, which means the bar-spacing question does not arise at all.
That is a slightly unsatisfying answer, because it means the dwarf-specific advantage of a wire cage is available only at sizes that are too small. But it is what the specifications say. The practical upshot: for a dwarf, buy a solid-walled enclosure that clears 775 square inches, and fit a fine mesh lid rather than a widely spaced one.

Wheel size for a dwarf

Eight inches, with a solid surface. This is the one place where buying for a dwarf is easier than buying for a Syrian: an 8-inch wheel needs about 9 inches of clear height, so it fits in enclosures a 12-inch wheel does not, and it takes far less floor.
Do not read that as license to buy a smaller enclosure. The wheel fitting more easily means you have more usable floor left, not that you need less. And do not go the other way either: an oversized drum makes the running surface feel flat and unstable to a small animal, which is why we recommend the 8.2-inch Niteangel for a dwarf rather than the 12.8. What we would buy for a dwarf
The BUCATSTATE 3.0 at 47 inches or the Niteangel Vista Large, for the same reason as for a Syrian: they clear the floor figure and have no bars to escape through. Fit a fine mesh lid, not a widely spaced one — the mesh is now your containment spec, and it is the one part of the setup you control.
If you specifically want a wire cage for the climbing, be clear-eyed about the trade you are making. The Prevue 528 at 3/8 inch is the tightest published spacing available on a mainstream cage, and it is 62 percent of the published floor minimum. That is a real trade-off rather than a good option, and the honest version of it is: use the Prevue as a secondary or travel cage and put the animal's home somewhere bigger.
One more thing specific to dwarfs. Deep bedding does more for a dwarf than for a Syrian, because Campbell's and winter whites are prolific burrowers and will use ten inches properly. The same deep bedding figures apply, and in a solid-walled enclosure you can actually achieve them.
