The BUCATSTATE 3.0 at 47 inches, on 1,109 square inches of floor — 43 percent past the published minimum and the largest single enclosure we can verify. An IKEA DETOLF laid on its back gives 1,086 square inches for less money and more work. The word to distrust is large: it appears on cages with 230 square inches in them.

There is no trading-standards definition of a large hamster cage, so the word costs a manufacturer nothing. The only way to shop this category is to take the published figure, take the manufacturer's own external dimensions, and do the multiplication yourself. That is the whole of this page.

We use 775 square inches of continuous, unbroken floor, which is PDSA's 100 x 50cm converted. Continuous matters: a second level, a shelf or a connected pod does not add to the figure, because a hamster cannot run across a gap. The full reasoning is on hamster cage size.

What the extra floor is actually for

Floor area is not a comfort metric, it is a behavior metric. A hamster in the wild covers ground; a hamster in a box that is too small performs the behaviors that replace covering ground, and those behaviors are the ones owners describe as personality problems. Persistent bar-biting, repetitive route-running along one wall and climbing the roof are the three most commonly reported, and all three are documented responses to an enclosure that is too small rather than traits of the animal.

This is why we rank by margin rather than by pass or fail. A cage on 780 square inches passes and an enclosure on 1,109 gives an animal somewhere to be that is not the place it just was. If you are already buying past the minimum, the extra floor is the cheapest part of the setup you will ever pay for.

Height is the constraint nobody shops for

The two enclosures at the top of this table have very different vertical space, and it decides what you can actually do with the floor. The DETOLF is 14.6 inches deep once it is on its back, and ten inches of bedding leaves under five inches of clear air — not enough for a 12-inch wheel inside the cabinet. The BUCATSTATE at 25.5 inches and the Vista Large at 26.9 inches at the rear both leave room for bedding and a compliant wheel at the same time.

If you want the biggest floor you can get and you are prepared to solve the wheel geometry with a graded bedding depth, the DETOLF is excellent value. What we would buy

The BUCATSTATE 3.0 at 47 inches. It has the largest verified floor of anything on the list, it is acrylic rather than MDF so the interior is non-porous, and it has the height to hold ten inches of substrate and a 12-inch wheel at the same time. That last combination is rarer than it sounds and it is what best cages for a Syrian hamster is entirely about.

If the budget will not reach, a DETOLF or a converted storage tub both clear the floor figure for considerably less. Neither is a worse home for a hamster. Both are more work for you, which is a different thing, and we would rather say that plainly than pretend the expensive option is the only adequate one.
