Guinea pigs

The best guinea pig cage for two

A pair is what almost everybody is buying for, and there is a published figure for it. One cage here clears the preferred area; the purpose-built habitat gives 74 percent of it.

Two black and white guinea pigs sitting together on a star-patterned blanket

Buy the Kavee 4x2 C&C cage. Humane World for Animals publishes 7.5 square feet as the bare minimum for two guinea pigs and at least 10.5 square feet as the figure to aim at, and the 4x2 is 55.1 x 27.6 inches — 1,521 square inches, about 10.6 square feet — which clears the preferred figure with nothing to spare and at the lowest price of the four cages here. The 6x2 at around 15.8 square feet is what to buy if the room takes it. The MidWest Guinea Habitat Plus clears the 7.5 square foot minimum at 7.8 and does not approach 10.5. The Omlet Eglu Go is the right answer outdoors and needs a run extension to reach the figure.

Guinea pig cage minimum · minimum

7.5 sq ft (about 30in x 36in) bare minimum for one; 7.5 sq ft minimum for two, with at least 10.5 sq ft (30in x 50in) preferred

Issued by Humane World for Animals, read 27 September 2026. The same guidance sets 10.5 sq ft minimum and 13 sq ft preferred for three, and 13 sq ft minimum with 30in x 76in preferred for four.

A pair is the default configuration rather than an upgrade. Humane World states that guinea pigs are highly social and that it is best to have at least two who get along with each other, which means the single-pig figure is mostly theoretical and the two-pig figure is the one almost every buyer actually needs. The site already carries a general cage roundup and a three-pig roundup; this page exists because the two-pig figures are different numbers and they change which cage wins.

They change it in an unusual direction, too. For three guinea pigs the preferred figure is 13 square feet and only the 6x2 gets there, so the answer is the biggest cage. For two the preferred figure is 10.5, and the cheapest cage here clears it. That is a genuinely good outcome for a buyer and it is the opposite of what the pet aisle implies.

The criteria, in the order they are applied

  1. 1.Continuous floor area against 10.5 square feet. Our arithmetic from the manufacturer's listed dimensions, shown so you can redo it. A loft, a shelf or a ramp is not floor.
  2. 2.Side height against 12 inches. Humane World publishes that the sides of a guinea pig enclosure must be at least 12 inches high. It is the figure most pet-store cages fail and nobody checks.
  3. 3.Flooring. Solid, and not wire. Humane World is explicit that plastic tubs, glass aquariums and cages with wire floors are not acceptable guinea pig housing.
  4. 4.Whether it extends. A pair becomes a trio surprisingly often, and a cage that grows by two grids is worth more than one that has to be replaced.
  5. 5.Cleaning access, last. It breaks ties and never outranks an area figure.

The three indoor options, ranked against the pair figure

The 4x2 clears 10.5 square feet at the lowest price, the 6x2 clears it by half again and takes a third pig later, and the Guinea Habitat Plus clears only the 7.5 square foot minimum. Full assessments of all four, including the outdoor hutch, are further down.

External dimensions and side heights are each manufacturer's own published figures, read 2026-09-27 and linked on every product card. Floor areas and the percentage are our arithmetic from those dimensions, shown so you can check them. The 6x2 figure is our extension of the verified 4x2 base by two grids rather than a separately published dimension, and is given as an approximation for that reason.

The row worth pausing on is the MidWest. It is the most widely sold purpose-built guinea pig habitat in the United States, it is explicitly marketed for two guinea pigs, the manufacturer states 8 square feet of living space, and our own arithmetic from its 47 x 24 inch dimensions gives 7.8. Both figures clear the 7.5 square foot bare minimum. Neither comes close to the 10.5 square feet Humane World asks you to aim at. The cage is not mis-sold; the minimum is just a long way below the target.

Why 10.5 square feet rather than 7.5

Because Humane World publishes both, and publishes them as a minimum and a preference rather than as a range to pick from. The 7.5 figure is the floor below which housing is not acceptable. The 10.5 figure is what the same organization asks you to provide. Buying to the first number and calling the job done is the most common way a guinea pig ends up in a cage that technically passes.

The behavioral argument is also simple and visible: guinea pigs popcorn and they run laps, and both need a straight line longer than two feet. A 55-inch cage gives a pair a run; a 47-inch one gives them a corridor. What size cage guinea pigs need sets out the whole figure set, and guinea pig cage size for 2 works the pair arithmetic through in detail, including what to do with a cage you already own.

Indoors or outdoors, which changes the answer

Everything above assumes indoors, which is where most pairs live. Outdoors the decision changes completely, because the deciding factor stops being area and becomes weather and predators. The RSPCA's temperature band for guinea pigs is 17-20C ideal, indoors below 15C, with heatstroke risk above 26C, and no amount of floor area solves a cold night.

That is the case the Omlet Eglu Go exists for: a twin-wall polyethylene shelter with draft-free ventilation and a coated weld-mesh run rather than stapled chicken wire. It costs several times a C&C cage of the same area and the shelter plus a 6ft run does not reach 10.5 square feet without a run extension. Outdoors, with the extension, it is the right buy. Indoors it earns nothing, because none of the weather features do any work in a living room.

Kavee 4x2 C&C Cage for Guinea Pigs

10.6 sq ft in one unbroken block clears the preferred figure for a pair rather than the bare minimum, which no pet-store guinea pig cage does at any price.

Clears our threshold10.6 sq ft against the 10.5 sq ft preferred figure
Dimensions
55.1 x 27.6 x 13.8 in (1.40 x 0.70 x 0.35 m) without a stand
Continuous floor
55.1 x 27.6 = 1,521 sq in, about 10.6 sq ft
Bar spacing
Powder-coated steel grids, 9 x 9 grid apertures
Material
Powder-coated steel grids, ABS connectors, corrugated polypropylene base
Wall height
13.8 in, above the 12 in minimum published for guinea pigs

What it gets right

  • 10.6 sq ft clears the 10.5 sq ft preferred area for two guinea pigs
  • 13.8 in walls clear the published 12 in minimum
  • Solid correx base, not wire, which the published guidance requires
  • Modular, so a 5x2 or 6x2 is an upgrade rather than a replacement

What it gets wrong

  • Open top, so it is not cat-safe or child-proof without a lid
  • Correx base creases at the corners and eventually needs replacing
  • Grid apertures are wide enough that a baby guinea pig can get through the lower row

Who should buy something else

Not for a household with a cat or a dog unless you add a lid. An open-topped pen in a room with a predator in it is not housing, whatever its footprint.

Number 2 · Three or four guinea pigs, or a pair with real running room

Kavee 6x2 C&C Cage for Guinea Pigs

About 15.8 sq ft, which is the size at which a pair stops pacing and starts using the far end, and the size we would buy if the wall allows it.

Clears our thresholdAbout 15.8 sq ft, well over the preferred figures
Dimensions
Six grids by two, roughly 82 x 27.6 in of base
Continuous floor
About 15.8 sq ft, by extending the verified 4x2 base by two grids
Bar spacing
Powder-coated steel grids, 9 x 9 grid apertures
Material
Powder-coated steel grids, ABS connectors, corrugated polypropylene base
Wall height
13.8 in, as on the 4x2

What it gets right

  • About 15.8 sq ft clears the 13 sq ft preferred figure for four guinea pigs
  • Same solid base, same 13.8 in walls, same modularity
  • Long enough that guinea pigs actually run rather than turn

What it gets wrong

  • Needs nearly seven feet of wall, which most rooms do not have spare
  • Open top, same predator caveat as the 4x2
  • A single correx base this long flexes and needs support along its length

Who should buy something else

Not for a small room. Measure the wall before you buy: a 6x2 that does not fit becomes a 4x2 with spare grids, which is an expensive way to get there.

Number 3 · A pair in a house with a cat, or two pigs that need separating

MidWest Guinea Habitat Plus

7.8 sq ft clears the bare minimum for a pair and misses the preferred figure, but it is the only cage here that ships with both a lid and a divider.

Clears part of it7.8 sq ft clears the 7.5 sq ft minimum, misses 10.5 sq ft preferred
Dimensions
47 x 24 x 14 in; manufacturer states 8 sq ft of living space
Continuous floor
47 x 24 = 1,128 sq in, about 7.8 sq ft
Bar spacing
Wire mesh top; side panels are solid-framed mesh
Material
Wire frame with a washable PVC-lined canvas bottom
Wall height and lid
14 in sides with a removable wire mesh top

What it gets right

  • Removable wire mesh top, so it is safe in a room with another pet
  • Divider panel with lock-in-place ramps separates two animals when needed
  • 14 in sides clear the 12 in minimum
  • PVC-lined canvas bottom is solid, washable and kinder to feet than wire

What it gets wrong

  • 7.8 sq ft is under the 10.5 sq ft preferred figure for two
  • Canvas bottom absorbs urine at the seams over time
  • Expanding it means buying another whole unit, not another grid

Who should buy something else

Not the choice if floor area is your only criterion. A Kavee 4x2 gives 2.8 sq ft more for a similar spend, provided you do not need the lid.

Number 4 · Outdoor guinea pigs in a climate with real weather

Omlet Eglu Go Guinea Pig Hutch

The only mainstream guinea pig housing that solves the outdoor weather problem properly, sold at a footprint that needs a run extension to reach the preferred figure.

Clears part of itNeeds a run extension for a pair
Dimensions
Sold with a 6ft run; shelter dimensions match the Eglu Go pattern
Continuous floor
6ft run plus shelter; under the 10.5 sq ft preferred figure once the shelter is excluded
Bar spacing
Double-layer fully coated steel weld mesh; gauge not published
Material
UV-stabilized twin-wall polyethylene with a coated steel run
Weather performance
Twin-wall insulation; draft-free ventilation

What it gets right

  • Twin-wall polyethylene shelter is warm in winter and hoses clean
  • Coated weld mesh run, not stapled chicken wire
  • Solid floor in the shelter, which the published guidance requires

What it gets wrong

  • Needs a run extension to clear the 10.5 sq ft preferred figure for a pair
  • Run mesh gauge not published
  • Costs several times a C&C cage of the same area

Who should buy something else

Not the value choice for indoor guinea pigs. Indoors, a C&C cage buys two or three times the floor for the same money, and the weather features earn nothing.

What we would buy

The Kavee 4x2 for a pair in a normal room. It clears the preferred figure, has 13.8-inch sides, a solid corrugated base rather than wire, and every part is individually replaceable — which over a five to seven year guinea pig lifespan means a bent grid does not make the cage rubbish. It is also the cheapest cage here, which is the unusual part.

The Kavee 6x2 if the wall takes 82 inches. Half again as much floor for a modest increase in price, room for a third pig later without buying anything, and the only cage here that clears the three-pig preferred figure as well. If you are at all likely to end up with three, buy this one now.

The MidWest Guinea Habitat Plus if you need a mesh top — a household with a cat is the real case — or if two pigs need separating and you want a second enclosure that folds flat. Accept that it is a 7.8 square foot cage and plan floor time accordingly. The Omlet outdoors, with the run extension, and not otherwise.

Questions people ask

What size cage do 2 guinea pigs need?
Humane World for Animals publishes 7.5 square feet as the bare minimum for two guinea pigs and at least 10.5 square feet — about 30 x 50 inches — as the figure to aim at, with sides at least 12 inches high. A 4x2 C&C cage at around 10.6 square feet is the cheapest widely available cage that clears the preferred figure.
What is the best cage for 2 guinea pigs?
The Kavee 4x2 C&C cage. At 55.1 x 27.6 inches it gives about 10.6 square feet of continuous floor, which clears the 10.5 square foot preferred figure, with 13.8-inch sides and a solid base. The 6x2 is better if the room takes 82 inches of wall, and it leaves room for a third guinea pig later.
Is the MidWest Guinea Habitat Plus big enough for two guinea pigs?
It clears the bare minimum and not the preferred figure. Its 47 x 24 inch footprint is about 7.8 square feet by our arithmetic, and the manufacturer states 8 square feet of living space; the Humane World minimum for a pair is 7.5 and the preferred figure is 10.5. It is a legitimate cage with a real use — a mesh top in a house with a cat — rather than the best pair cage.
How high do the sides of a guinea pig cage need to be?
At least 12 inches, per Humane World for Animals. Every cage we recommend clears it, at 13.8 to 14 inches. It is the specification most commonly missed on pet-store cages and on homemade grid builds, where two grid-squares of height is not enough.
Can two guinea pigs live in a cage with a wire floor?
No. Humane World states plainly that plastic tubs, glass aquariums and cages with wire floors are not acceptable as guinea pig housing. Wire floors cause foot injury, and every cage on this page has a solid base — corrugated polypropylene on the Kavee cages, PVC-lined canvas on the MidWest.
Should I buy a bigger cage in case I get a third guinea pig?
If it is at all likely, yes, and buy the 6x2 now. The three-pig figures are 10.5 square feet minimum and 13 preferred, which a 4x2 at 10.6 meets only at the minimum. A 6x2 at around 15.8 square feet covers both, and extending a C&C cage later is cheaper than replacing it but more expensive than buying it right.
