Aivituvin AIR28 review
A good hutch, honestly measured against a figure no hutch on sale meets. What it is for, and what has to go around it.

The Aivituvin AIR28 is the largest timber hutch-and-run package we have verified, at a manufacturer-stated 17.46 square feet of inner space, and it is a shelter rather than a home. RWAF and the RSPCA independently publish 3m x 2m x 1m — about 64.5 square feet in a single unbroken block — as the minimum living space for two rabbits, and 17.46 square feet is 27 percent of that. No commercially sold hutch-and-run package we have assessed clears the figure, so this is not a criticism of this product specifically; it is the category. What the AIR28 is genuinely good at is being the sheltered end of a setup whose other end is a pen: solid fir rather than thin ply, a waterproof asphalt roof, galvanized mesh, and enough internal volume that two rabbits can both be inside it in bad weather. Buy it to sit inside or alongside a pen that makes up the rest of the footprint, and plan to cover the wire floor panel on the run section.
Rabbit enclosure minimum · minimum
a single enclosed area of at least 3m x 2m by 1m high
Our conversion: 9ft 10in x 6ft 7in x 3ft 3in, about 64.5 square feet of floor
That single-block rule is the thing to understand before reading any hutch review, including this one. RWAF is explicit that the 3m x 2m footprint must be one continuous area, and that upper floors, raised platforms, tunnels and connectors do not count towards it. A two-storey hutch with a ramp is therefore not 17.46 square feet of qualifying space under that rule even if its two levels add up to that — it is a shelter with a mezzanine. How big should a rabbit hutch be works through what that means for the whole category.

Inner space, construction, roof and the mesh floor panel are from the Aivituvin product listing cited under Sources. The square-inch conversion, the percentage and the score are ours, and our scores assess published specifications rather than reporting test results. Aivituvin publishes a total inner-space figure rather than a per-level footprint, so we quote it as stated rather than splitting it.
What it gets right
It is actually made of timber. Solid fir rather than the thin ply and stapled trim that the sub-$150 end of this category is built from. That matters for a product that lives outdoors in weather, and it is the main reason this hutch appears at the top of the best rabbit hutches rather than a cheaper unit with a bigger number on the box.
A waterproof asphalt roof. The single most common failure point on a timber hutch is the roof, because a felt or painted-ply roof that leaks soaks the carcass and the hutch is then finished. Asphalt sheet is the right specification here.
17.46 square feet, which is the most we have verified in this format. Within the hutch-and-run category this is the biggest honest number, and it means two average rabbits can be inside the sheltered volume together rather than taking turns. Against the published figure it is still 27 percent, and both of those statements are true at once.
An underfloor mesh panel on the run. Rabbits dig, and a run without dig protection is a run with an exit. This is a real feature and it is also the source of the main thing you have to fix, which is the next section.
What has to be fixed, and what cannot be
The wire floor panel needs covering. A mesh floor stops a rabbit digging out and it is the wrong surface for a rabbit to stand on for any length of time: wire floors are associated with sore hocks, and the same objection appears in published small-animal housing advice across species. The fix is cheap and it is not optional — tile, a thick mat, or a solid board over the mesh section, so the mesh is doing its anti-dig job underneath something the animal can actually sit on. Rabbit hutch flooring covers the options.
The gauge and aperture of the mesh are not published. Aivituvin states galvanized wire mesh and does not give a wire gauge or an aperture, and we record that as unpublished rather than estimating it. For a hutch that will stand outdoors overnight that is the specification you would most want, because mesh gauge is most of what separates a fox-resistant enclosure from a decorative one. Predator-proof rabbit hutches is the page that sets out what to check and what to add.
The footprint cannot be fixed by anything in the box. This is the part no amount of good carpentry addresses. 17.46 square feet against 64.5 is a shortfall of about 47 square feet, and the only ways to close it are a permanent pen attached to the hutch or free run of a secured area. Four 16 square foot exercise pens clipped into one footprint clears the figure; a bigger hutch does not exist. Outdoor hutch or indoor pen is the page that frames that choice, and the best rabbit runs is the shortlist for the other half.
Who should buy it
- Someone building a compliant setup in a garden, who needs a weatherproof shelter at one end of a pen and wants it to last more than two winters.
- A buyer replacing a leaking or rotten hutch, where the asphalt roof and solid fir carcass are the whole reason to spend more.
- Anyone with two rabbits who both need to be inside in bad weather, since this is the largest sheltered volume we have verified in the format.
- Someone who will cover the wire floor on day one. If that is not going to happen, buy a hutch with a solid floor throughout instead.
Who should not
Anyone expecting this to be the whole enclosure, and anyone who wants it to be winter-proof out of the box in a genuinely cold climate — for that the insulated option in rabbit hutch winter protection is the better starting point, and the TRIXIE Natura insulated unit is the product we assess for it. Also not the buyer who wants indoor housing: this is an outdoor product, and the best indoor rabbit cages is the right page for that.
