Rabbits
The best rabbit runs
No hutch houses a rabbit on its own, which makes the run the important purchase. Four measured against a figure most of them miss by a factor of four.

Buy MidWest exercise pens and clip them together. One 48-inch pen is eight 24-inch panels enclosing 16 square feet, which is a quarter of what you need — but four of them joined into a single footprint clear the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund's minimum of 3m x 2m, about 64.5 square feet, which no single product on this page does. That is the honest answer to the best-rabbit-run question: the thing that reaches the published figure is a modular pen you buy several of, not a run you buy one of. The best complete package here is the Omlet Eglu Go with its 2m run, which encloses about 51.5 square feet including the shelter — 80 percent of the figure, and the closest any finished product gets. The two timber hutch-and-run units are shelters with a small attached area, not runs, and they are on this page so you can see the gap rather than guess at it.
Rabbit enclosure minimum · minimum
a single enclosed area of at least 3m x 2m by 1m high
Our conversion: 9ft 10in x 6ft 7in x 3ft 3in, about 64.5 square feet of floor
Start with the qualifier, because it is the part every product listing omits and the part that decides this whole category. RWAF does not just publish 3m x 2m x 1m high. It states that the footprint must be a single block of space, and that upper floors, raised platforms, tunnels and connectors do not count towards it. It also states the figure is for two average-sized rabbits and does not reduce for a single rabbit.
Apply that clause honestly and most of the market disappears. A two-storey hutch with a ramp down to a small run is a shelter plus a connector plus a raised platform, and RWAF counts only the ground-level block. What size hutch a rabbit needs works the whole figure through; rabbit run size is the companion page to this one.
The four, measured
| Product | What it is | Enclosed area | vs 64.5 sq ft | Height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MidWest exercise pen, 48in | Eight 24in panels, clips to more pens | 16 sq ft as one octagon; over 64.5 sq ft with four joined | 25% alone, 100%+ joined | 48in |
| Omlet Eglu Go with 2m run | Plastic shelter with an attached weld-mesh run | About 51.5 sq ft overall footprint | 80% | 2ft 7.5in overall |
| Aivituvin AIR28 | Timber hutch with a run section | 17.46 sq ft of inner space, per the maker | 27% | Hutch height |
| TRIXIE Natura two-story | Insulated timber shelter, two levels | 2,025 sq in across both levels, about 14.1 sq ft | Under 22% at ground level | 25.5in |
Dimensions and enclosed areas are each manufacturer's published figures, read 2026-09-27 and linked on every product card below. The percentage column is our arithmetic against the RWAF figure. The TRIXIE row is deliberately shown as a both-levels figure with a ground-level caveat, because RWAF does not count upper floors.
The MidWest row is the only one that reaches the figure and it reaches it by multiplication, which is a genuinely unsatisfying answer and also the true one. We are not going to name a single run as compliant when none is. What we can do is tell you exactly how many pens it takes: four 48-inch pens joined into one footprint, which is 32 panels and about 64 square feet of ground.

The three we would actually buy
The modular pen that gets you to the published figure if you buy four, the best complete shelter-and-run package on the market at 80 percent of it, and the largest timber unit here — useful as the shelter inside a bigger pen rather than as the enclosure itself. Full assessments of all four are further down.

Why pens beat purpose-built runs
- They scale to the figure. This is the whole argument. A run sold as a run is a fixed size, and the fixed sizes on sale are a quarter to a half of what is published. Panels are not.
- They reshape to the garden. 64.5 square feet in an L around a patio is the same 64.5 square feet as a rectangle, and it is often the only way to find it in a real garden.
- They connect to any shelter. A pen does not care whose hutch it is clipped to, which matters because the shelter and the run are separate purchasing decisions.
- Heavy-gauge wire with an e-coat finish is what the MidWest panels are, and it is a better material for a long-term outdoor pen than the stapled chicken wire on cheap timber runs.
- The trade-off is honest: a pen is not predator-proof on its own, and it has no roof. Both of those are solvable and neither is solved by buying it alone.
What a pen does not do, and what to add
A wire pen is containment, not protection. The MidWest panels are 48 inches high, which is enough to hold a rabbit that is not motivated to climb and nothing at all against a fox, a dog or a bird of prey. If the pen is outdoors and unsupervised, it needs a secured top and it needs the perimeter dealt with, because rabbits dig and predators dig.
- 1.A roof or top panels over the whole footprint, not over part of it. This is the single biggest cost people do not budget for.
- 2.Anti-dig at the perimeter — underfloor wire, a buried skirt, or a pen set on a hard standing. The Omlet Eglu Go supplies underfloor wire with its run, which is the reason it rates as well as it does.
- 3.A shelter inside the footprint, permanently accessible. RWAF publishes a separate figure for it: 1.8m x 0.6m x 0.6m high.
- 4.Shade and shelter from rain, which the RSPCA addresses as part of the environment rather than as an extra.
- 5.A check of the panel joins every week. A clipped pen is only as good as its weakest clip, and they loosen.
Rabbit sleeping quarters minimum · minimum
1.8m x 0.6m x 0.6m high (6ft x 2ft x 2ft)
Predator-proof rabbit hutches covers the protection half properly, and hutch versus indoor pen covers the case where the answer is to bring the whole setup inside — which, for a lot of households, is the only realistic way to find 64.5 square feet.
The Omlet, and why it is the best finished product here
The Eglu Go with the 2m run encloses about 51.5 square feet, which is the closest any single purchase on this page gets to the figure. It also solves two problems the pens do not: the run is double-layer fully coated steel weld mesh rather than stapled wire, and underfloor anti-dig wire is supplied rather than sold separately. The shelter is UV-stabilized twin-wall polyethylene, which means it can be hosed and disinfected, and it is the same object in year ten as in year one.
It is still 80 percent of the published minimum, and Omlet sells run extensions precisely because of that. Our reading: buy the Eglu Go package and add enough run extension to reach 64.5 square feet of continuous ground, or buy it and clip a pen onto the end. The Omlet Eglu review goes through the shelter in detail.
The two timber units, and what they are actually for
The Aivituvin AIR28 states 17.46 square feet of inner space and the TRIXIE Natura two-story gives about 14.1 square feet across both its levels. Neither is a run, and we would not buy either as one. What the AIR28 is good for is the shelter inside a bigger pen: it is solid fir with a waterproof asphalt roof, it is the largest timber shelter we assess, and a rabbit that has 64 square feet of pen around it does not need the hutch to be the enclosure.
The TRIXIE's case is narrower and it is about winter. It is the only product we assess with an insulated shell, which makes it the shelter to choose in a cold climate — inside a pen, not instead of one. Winter protection for a rabbit hutch covers that properly. One thing to check on both: the mesh floor panel on the AIR28's run section is a wire floor, and rabbit hutch flooring explains why that needs covering.
The assessments
Our pick · Building a footprint that actually clears the published minimum
MidWest Homes for Pets 48 in Exercise Pen, 8 panels
The cheapest honest route to the 64.5 sq ft minimum, because four of these pens joined together get you there and a single hutch never will.
- Dimensions
- Eight panels, each 24 in wide by 48 in high; 16 sq ft enclosed
- Continuous floor
- 16 sq ft (2,304 sq in) enclosed as an octagon
- Bar spacing
- Mesh aperture listed as 1.5 x 6 in
- Material
- Heavy-gauge wire with an e-coat finish
- Expandability
- Add-on panels sold separately; pens clip together into one footprint
What it gets right
- 16 sq ft per pen, and add-on panels let you build one large block rather than several small ones
- 48 in height clears the 3ft 3in RWAF asks for
- Folds flat, so it can be moved or stored
- Ground anchors are included, which most pens leave out
What it gets wrong
- 1.5 x 6 in mesh apertures are wide enough for a small or young rabbit to push through; line the lower section
- No roof, so it is not predator-proof outdoors on its own
- Wire floor is the ground, which means digging out unless you lay mesh underneath
Who should buy something else
Not an outdoor enclosure by itself. Without a roof and a dug-in mesh skirt it is an exercise area, not secure housing, and a fox will treat it as a bowl.

Number 2 · The shelter half of a compliant setup
Omlet Eglu Go Rabbit Hutch with 2m Run
The best-engineered shelter in the category, on a package footprint of about 51.5 sq ft that still falls 13 sq ft short of the 3m x 2m minimum RWAF and the RSPCA both publish.
- Dimensions
- Hutch 2ft 6in x 2ft 5in x 1ft 11in; with the 2m run, 9ft 6in x 5ft 5in x 2ft 7.5in overall
- Continuous floor
- 9ft 6in x 5ft 5in = about 51.5 sq ft of enclosed footprint
- Bar spacing
- Run is double-layer fully coated steel weld mesh; gauge not published
- Material
- UV-stabilized twin-wall polyethylene shelter, coated steel weld-mesh run
- Predator and dig protection
- Underfloor wire supplied to stop digging out; anti-tunnel base
What it gets right
- Twin-wall polyethylene does not rot, does not harbour mite, and hoses clean
- Double-layer coated weld mesh is a genuine step above stapled chicken wire
- Underfloor wire against digging is supplied rather than sold separately
- Run extensions are made to fit, so the footprint can be grown to the real minimum
What it gets wrong
- 51.5 sq ft as sold is short of the 64.5 sq ft RWAF asks for
- Mesh gauge is not published, so you cannot check it against a fox before buying
- The shelter alone, at 2ft 6in x 2ft 5in, is smaller than RWAF's 6ft x 2ft shelter figure
- Costs more than a timber hutch of the same footprint
Who should buy something else
Not a complete enclosure straight out of the box, whatever the product page implies. Budget for at least one run extension from the start, or it will not clear the published minimum.

Number 3 · A large shelter inside a bigger pen
Aivituvin AIR28 Rabbit Hutch with Large Run
The largest timber hutch-and-run package we could verify at 17.46 sq ft, which is about 27 percent of the enclosure RWAF publishes as a minimum.
- Dimensions
- Manufacturer states 17.46 sq ft of inner space
- Continuous floor
- 17.46 sq ft (2,514 sq in) as stated by the manufacturer
- Bar spacing
- Galvanized wire mesh; gauge and aperture not published
- Material
- Solid fir timber with waterproof asphalt roof and galvanized mesh
- Dig protection
- Wire mesh floor panel on the run section
What it gets right
- 17.46 sq ft of stated inner space is at the top of the timber hutch class
- Two stories, so the shelter section is genuinely separate from the run
- Asphalt roof and treated fir handle rain better than untreated pine hutches
What it gets wrong
- 17.46 sq ft is far below the 64.5 sq ft minimum, so this cannot be the whole enclosure
- Mesh gauge and aperture are not published, which is the spec a fox cares about
- Timber absorbs urine at the corners and needs re-treating annually
- Wire mesh run floor is hard on rabbit feet without a solid mat over part of it
Who should buy something else
Wrong as a standalone home. It is a shelter, and it works only inside a pen that brings the footprint up to the published minimum.

Number 4 · Cold-winter shelter inside a larger pen
TRIXIE Natura Insulated Two-Story Rabbit Hutch
The only insulated shelter we could verify, which makes it the right answer to a cold-winter question and still not an enclosure on its own.
- Dimensions
- 45.5 x 44.5 x 25.5 in (retailer-listed)
- Continuous floor
- 45.5 x 44.5 = 2,025 sq in, about 14.1 sq ft across both levels
- Bar spacing
- Wire mesh doors; aperture not published
- Material
- Glazed pine with an insulated shell and a hinged roof
- Winter performance
- Insulated shell, the only one on this list with that claim
What it gets right
- Insulated shell is a genuine winter advantage over single-skin timber
- Hinged roof gives full access for cleaning
- 14.1 sq ft across two levels is a roomy shelter
What it gets wrong
- Two levels means the lower footprint is much less than 14.1 sq ft, and RWAF does not count upper floors
- Glazed pine still needs annual re-treating
- Mesh aperture not published
Who should buy something else
Not for a mild climate where the insulation buys nothing. In a mild winter you are paying for a feature you will not use and getting less footprint than the money would buy elsewhere.

What we would buy
Four MidWest 48-inch pens clipped into one footprint, a secured top over the whole thing, underfloor wire or a hard standing at the perimeter, and a shelter inside it that meets RWAF's 1.8m x 0.6m x 0.6m figure. That is the cheapest configuration we can name that actually reaches the published minimum, and it is roughly four times the enclosed area of any single hutch-and-run package sold.
If you want one box to arrive and work, the Omlet Eglu Go with the 2m run plus a run extension is the answer, and it is a considerably more expensive one. Either way, the number to hold onto is 64.5 square feet of continuous ground-level space, because that is the figure and nothing on a product listing is going to remind you of it.
