To actually clear the figure, pair a shelter with joined exercise pens, which give the footprint at the lowest cost per square foot of anything we assessed.

This roundup is structured differently from the others on the site, because the honest answer to "what is the best rabbit hutch" is that the question is the wrong shape. A hutch is a shelter. The enclosure is a separate purchase, and pretending otherwise is how a 9.6 square foot hutch gets sold as a home.

The criteria

1. 1.Footprint against 64.5 square feet, counting only continuous ground-level area — RWAF excludes platforms and tunnels, so we do too. This is why every product here shows a shortfall.
2. 2.Predator resistance: mesh aperture and gauge, weld type, latch mechanism, dig protection. Several manufacturers do not publish the mesh figure, which costs them marks because it is the specification a fox is testing.
3. 3.Height against 1m, which several hutches fail on their own terms regardless of area.
4. 4.Flooring, because a wire floor is ruled out by published guidance for small pets and is the single most common failure in budget hutches.
5. 5.Weather performance and material durability, over two years of rain rather than out of the box.

Everything side by side

Why the Omlet wins despite falling short

At about 51.5 square feet the Eglu Go with a 2m run is the largest single package here and still 13 square feet under the minimum. We rank it first anyway, on material and engineering.

UV-stabilized twin-wall polyethylene does not rot, does not absorb urine, does not harbour mite in its joints, and hoses clean. Every timber hutch on this list needs re-treating annually and will eventually fail at a corner that has taken on water. Over a rabbit's eight-to-twelve-year life that difference compounds into a replacement cycle. The run is double-layer coated steel weld mesh, which is a genuine step above the stapled wire on budget hutches, and underfloor wire against digging is supplied rather than sold separately.

Its weaknesses are real: the mesh gauge is not published, so you cannot assess it against a determined fox before buying; the shelter alone is smaller than RWAF's 6ft x 2ft shelter figure; and it costs several times a timber hutch of the same footprint. Full detail in the Omlet Eglu review.

Why exercise pens are second

An eight-panel 48-inch exercise pen encloses 16 square feet, and four joined together give about 64 — which clears the figure. At that point you have the footprint for less money per square foot than any other route, plus 48 inches of height against a 3ft 3in requirement.

Two honest caveats, both of which matter outdoors. The published mesh aperture is 1.5 x 6 inches, which is wide enough for a small or young rabbit to push through, so the lower section needs lining. And a pen has no roof and no floor, so without a dug-in mesh skirt and a cover it is an exercise area rather than secure housing. Indoors, neither caveat applies and it is simply the cheapest way to give a rabbit real floor.

The timber hutches, honestly

Four of the six products here are timber, and they occupy 8 to 27 percent of the published footprint. They are not bad products; they are shelters, and against RWAF's 6ft x 2ft x 2ft shelter figure several of them are the right size.

What separates them is weather and flooring. What we would actually buy

• Outdoors, best outcome: an Eglu Go Hutch plus run extensions until the footprint clears 64.5 square feet. Most expensive route, lowest maintenance, longest life.
• Outdoors, best value: a timber shelter inside four joined exercise pens, with a dug-in mesh skirt, a roof and the lower pen section lined. More work, much more floor per pound.
• Outdoors, cold winter: the TRIXIE Natura insulated shelter inside the same pen arrangement.

And the thing we would tell anyone standing in a shop looking at a hutch: measure the internal height. Both published standards require 1m (3ft 3in), a great many hutches have 18 to 24 inches, and that is the one figure you can check in thirty seconds without any of our arithmetic.
