Ferrets
The best ferret cage for two ferrets
The published minimum does not change when you add a second ferret, because no body publishes one. What changes is whether you can split the cage when you need to.

For a pair of adult ferrets, the Savic Royal Suite 95. It has the most usable floor per level of any cage here at 6.4 square feet, 13mm bars, and the one feature that only matters once there are two animals: it separates into two independent cages. That solves an introduction, a quarantine and a fight without buying a second enclosure. If either ferret is a kit, buy the Critter Nation 162 instead, because half-inch bars outrank everything else on this page. If both are grown and climb constantly, the Ferret Nation 182 gives them the most to climb on.
Ferret cage suggested minimum · suggested minimum
24in x 24in x 18in high (60cm x 60cm x 45cm)
Our conversion: 576 square inches, or 4 square feet, of floor
Start with what is not published, because it shapes the whole of this page. VCA Animal Hospitals suggests 24 x 24 x 18in as a minimum ferret cage and does not differentiate that figure for more than one animal. Nor does anyone else we could find. There is no published two-ferret number to measure a product against, in the way there is a published figure for two guinea pigs or for two rabbits.
So the honest version of this page is not "here is the figure for two, and here is what clears it". It is: the floor-area filter barely moves, every mainstream ferret cage already clears the published suggestion several times over, and the things that actually change when you go from one ferret to two are structural. We say which ones, and we label our own threshold as ours.
What genuinely changes with a second ferret
- 1.You will need to separate them, sooner or later. Introductions, a scuffle that goes too far, a post-operative animal that must not be climbed on, a contagious illness. For a pair, the ability to divide the enclosure is worth more than an extra square foot of floor, and only one cage here provides it as a design feature rather than a bodge.
- 2.Sleeping furniture doubles and must not be shared under duress. VCA notes that ferrets sleep 12 to 18 hours a day and that a dark, enclosed sleeping area is critical. Two ferrets who like each other will pile into one hammock; two who are negotiating will each need their own, out of sight of the other. Plan for at least three sleep spots for two animals.
- 3.Litter boxes scale faster than animals. VCA's guidance is high-sided boxes in the corners, cleaned daily, with more boxes in the play area. Two ferrets in a two-level cage means a box per level at minimum, and that is floor you have spent.
- 4.Usable floor per level, not total floor. Our own threshold is 6 square feet of continuous usable floor per level, and we apply it per level rather than in total because a ferret lives on one plane at a time. A cage that reaches 12 square feet by stacking four shallow shelves is not two good levels.
- 5.The out-of-cage requirement does not halve. VCA asks for at least two to three hours a day, and says the more the better. Two ferrets do not entertain each other into needing less of it. They need the same, together.

The three worth buying for a pair
The one that splits in two, the one with the most floor and the best climbing, and the one with the safest bars. Which of the three is right depends almost entirely on the age of your ferrets. Full assessments below.

95 x 63 cm = 5,985 cm2, about 928 sq in (6.4 sq ft) per level
The most floor per level of the three big ferret cages and the only one that splits into two separate cages, at 13mm spacing that is functionally the Critter Nation's half-inch.

MidWest Ferret Nation Double Unit (182)
36 x 25 = 900 sq in (6.25 sq ft) per level, two levels
Slightly more floor per level than the Critter Nation and a one-inch bar gap, which is fine for a grown ferret and the reason kits escape.

Bar spacing and external dimensions are each manufacturer's own published figures, read on 27 September 2026 and linked on each product card. Floor areas are our arithmetic from those dimensions, shown so you can redo them. Our own per-level threshold of 6 square feet is ours and is labeled as such in the methodology.
Three of the four are, for practical purposes, the same cage. Six to six and a half square feet per level, two levels, deep pans, full-width doors. Shopping between them on floor area is shopping on a quarter of a square foot, which is nothing. The two columns that separate them are the last two.
Why the split is worth more than the floor
The Savic Royal Suite 95 is two cages that clip together. Unclipped, each half is an independent enclosure with its own door and its own pan. That sounds like a convenience feature in a catalogue and it is not: it is the answer to the three situations that cost ferret owners the most money and the most sleep.
- Introducing a new ferret. Separated but adjacent is the standard way to do this, and doing it in one object rather than two means the animals share air, smell and routine from day one.
- A fight that draws blood. You need the two apart tonight, not when a second cage arrives.
- One animal on cage rest. A ferret recovering from surgery cannot have a cage-mate landing on it from the shelf above, and a ferret that has to be kept off a ramp cannot be in a cage whose only other level is up one.
The counter-argument is real and we would rather state it than bury it: the Savic is harder to buy in the United States than either MidWest cage, and spares and replacement pans are harder still. If next-day availability matters more to you than the split does, that is a defensible trade and the Critter Nation against Savic Royal Suite comparison works through it in detail.
Where the Prevue 485 falls out
It is a competent cage and it is the wrong size for two. At 620 square inches per level it is 4.3 square feet against our 6 square foot per-level threshold, which is a third less floor than the other three on the page, and the gap shows up exactly where a pair needs room: two litter boxes, two sleep spots and a food station on a 31 by 20 inch level leaves very little walking.
Its bar spacing of 7/8 of an inch would also disqualify it for a kit, and it is included here rather than left off because people buy it for a pair on the strength of its height and its price, and the floor underneath that height is the thing to look at.
The assessments
Our pick · Two ferrets that sometimes need separating
Savic Royal Suite 95 Rat and Ferret Cage
The most floor per level of the three big ferret cages and the only one that splits into two separate cages, at 13mm spacing that is functionally the Critter Nation's half-inch.
- Dimensions
- 95 x 63 x 159 cm (37.4 x 24.8 x 62.6 in)
- Continuous floor
- 95 x 63 cm = 5,985 cm2, about 928 sq in (6.4 sq ft) per level
- Bar spacing
- 13mm (about 1/2 in)
- Material
- Powder-coated steel with horizontal and vertical mesh, made in Belgium
- Levels and configuration
- Two levels that can be split into two separate cages
What it gets right
- 928 sq in per level, more than either MidWest cage
- 13mm spacing is effectively the half-inch standard
- Splits into two independent cages, which solves introductions and illness
- Horizontal bars give climbing purchase that half-inch horizontal mesh usually loses
What it gets wrong
- Harder to buy in the US than the MidWest cages, and spares are harder still
- 159cm tall, so the top level is above eye level for many owners
- Costs more than the Critter Nation
Who should buy something else
Not the sensible pick if you want next-day spares and a replacement pan from a local retailer. That is where the MidWest cages win regardless of specification.

Number 2 · Adult ferrets that climb
MidWest Ferret Nation Double Unit (182)
Slightly more floor per level than the Critter Nation and a one-inch bar gap, which is fine for a grown ferret and the reason kits escape.
- Dimensions
- 36 x 25 x 62.5 in including the rolling stand
- Continuous floor
- 36 x 25 = 900 sq in (6.25 sq ft) per level, two levels
- Bar spacing
- 1 in
- Material
- Powder-coated steel with deep removable plastic pans
- Levels and ramps
- Two levels with locking swing-up ramps and ramp covers
What it gets right
- 6.25 sq ft per level, marginally more than the Critter Nation
- 1 in bars give much better climbing purchase
- Same full-width doors, deep pans and locking ramps
- Usually cheaper than the equivalent Critter Nation
What it gets wrong
- 1 in spacing is the single reason ferret kits get out of this cage
- No way to retrofit narrower spacing; the fix is a different cage or wire panels
Who should buy something else
Never for kits, and not for a small jill who can flatten her head through a one-inch gap. Measure the animal, not the marketing, and buy the Critter Nation if there is any doubt.

Number 3 · Ferrets of any age, and kits especially
MidWest Critter Nation Double Unit (162)
The half-inch bar spacing is the whole argument: it is the same cage as the Ferret Nation with a gap a ferret kit cannot get its head through.
- Dimensions
- 36 x 24 x 63 in including the rolling stand
- Continuous floor
- 36 x 24 = 864 sq in (6 sq ft) per level, two levels
- Bar spacing
- 1/2 in horizontal
- Material
- Powder-coated steel with deep removable plastic pans
- Levels and ramps
- Two levels with a locking swing-up ramp and full-width doors
What it gets right
- 1/2 in bar spacing holds a kit that 1 in spacing does not
- 6 sq ft of usable floor per level, comfortably over our per-level bar
- Full-width doors mean you can reach every corner, which matters weekly
- Deep pans contain litter rather than spreading it
What it gets wrong
- Horizontal half-inch bars give less climbing purchase than wider spacing
- Heavy and awkward to assemble alone
- The stand's casters roll on hard floors more than you want them to
Who should buy something else
Not necessary if your ferrets are adults and you have measured their head width against 1 in. The Ferret Nation costs less and climbs better; the half-inch is insurance you may not need.

Number 4 · A smaller room and a single adult ferret
Prevue Pet Products Feisty Ferret Home 485
A cheaper multi-level cage whose 4.3 sq ft per level and 7/8 in bars both land below the standards we apply, which is the honest reason it is last here.
- Dimensions
- 31 x 20 x 54 in with the stand, 41.5 in high without it
- Continuous floor
- 31 x 20 = 620 sq in (4.3 sq ft) per level
- Bar spacing
- 7/8 in
- Material
- Powder-coated wire with removable platforms, grille and debris tray
- Included fittings
- Ramps, shelves and a hammock supplied
What it gets right
- Fits a 31 in footprint where the MidWest cages need 36 in
- Hammock, ramps and shelves included
- Removable grille and tray make cleaning straightforward
What it gets wrong
- 620 sq in per level is 28 percent less than the Critter Nation
- 7/8 in bar spacing is close enough to 1 in to carry the same kit risk
- Lighter gauge wire than the MidWest and Savic cages
Who should buy something else
Not for kits, not for two ferrets, and not if you can fit a 36 in cage. It solves a space problem and does nothing else better.

What we would buy for two ferrets
Two adults, and you can source it: the Savic Royal Suite 95. Most floor per level, 13mm bars, 159cm tall, and it comes apart into two cages on the evening you need it to.
Two adults, and you want spares from a US retailer tomorrow: the Ferret Nation 182 if both animals are grown and measured against a one-inch gap, the Critter Nation 162 if there is any doubt at all. The difference between those two is set out in full in Ferret Nation against Critter Nation, and the short version is that you are buying half an inch of insurance.
A kit and an adult, which is the most common way people end up with two: the Critter Nation 162, without hesitation, and a plan to separate them while they are being introduced. The Savic would do the same job better if you can get one, which is the running theme of this page.
