On specification the Savic Royal Suite 95 wins: about 928 square inches per level against the Critter Nation's 864, 13mm bar spacing which is functionally the same half-inch, horizontal climbing bars, and the ability to split into two independent cages. The Critter Nation 162 wins on availability and spares in the US, which over a six-to-ten-year ferret lifespan is a real consideration rather than a footnote.

Where the Savic is genuinely better

More floor per level. 928 square inches against 864 is about 7 percent, which is larger than the gap between any other two cages in this category. Not transformative, and it is the right direction.

It splits into two cages. This is the feature that would make us choose it if the sourcing were equal. A cage that becomes two independent cages solves three separate problems: introducing a new ferret, isolating a sick one, and separating a pair whose relationship has broken down. Otherwise each of those means buying a second cage, and the Savic gives you one for free the day you need it.

Horizontal and vertical mesh. This is the clever part of the design. Half-inch spacing usually costs you climbing purchase — it is the main thing the Critter Nation gives up against the Ferret Nation, as covered in Ferret Nation vs Critter Nation. The Savic's combination of orientations restores some of that grip while keeping the 13mm gap, which is the best of both.

Height-adjustable platforms. Removable and repositionable, so the interior can be reconfigured as the animals' preferences change. The Critter Nation's shelf and ramp positions are fixed.

Where the Critter Nation wins, and why it matters

Spares. This is the whole argument and it is not a small one. Ferrets live six to ten years. Over that period a pan will crack, a shelf will corrode where urine has sat, a caster will fail. With the Critter Nation you order the part. With the Savic in the US you may not be able to, and a two-level cage missing a pan is not a two-level cage.

Availability. If a cage needs replacing because an animal has arrived unexpectedly, the one you can have this week beats the one you can have eventually.

Height. The Savic is 159cm — about 62.6 inches — with the top level above eye level for many owners. The Critter Nation is 63 inches including its stand, and its upper pan sits lower. Reaching into a cage above your sightline every day is worse than it sounds.

Price. The Savic costs more, and the difference buys 64 square inches per level plus the splitting feature. Whether that is worth it depends on how likely you are to need to separate animals.

Both clear the VCA suggested minimum many times over and both clear our own six-square-feet-per-level threshold, so this comparison is genuinely about the secondary properties rather than about adequacy. Either is a good cage.

The verdict, by owner

• You expect to need to separate animals — introducing a new ferret, an animal with a health history, an unstable pair: Savic. The splitting feature is worth more than everything else on this page.
• You want the simplest long ownership: Critter Nation. Spares you can order, stocked everywhere, replaceable in a week.
• Climbing matters to you and you want half-inch bars: Savic, for the mixed mesh orientation. This is the only cage that gives you both.
• You are tall and do not want to reach above eye level: Critter Nation.
• Budget is the constraint: Critter Nation, and spend the difference on hammocks and a second litter tray.
