BUCATSTATE hamster cage review

The BUCATSTATE 3.0 at 47 inches is the best hamster enclosure we assessed on the two specifications that matter most: 1,109 square inches of continuous floor against a 775 square inch minimum, and a manufacturer-stated bedding capacity of up to 11 inches against PDSA's 10-inch figure. Its smaller siblings do not clear the floor minimum — the 39-inch model misses it by one square inch and the 31-inch by 29 percent.

BUCATSTATE is the interesting case in this category because the range brackets the published minimum almost exactly. Buying the right model out of three is the whole decision, and the difference between them is not obvious from the marketing, which describes all of them in the same terms.

The range against the figure

774 square inches against a 775 square inch minimum is the kind of coincidence that makes a point better than an argument would. The 39-inch model is a perfectly well-made enclosure that lands one square inch under the figure published by four independent bodies, and the manufacturer describes it in exactly the same language as the 47-inch model that clears it by 43 percent.

We are not suggesting that is deliberate. We are suggesting it is the reason to do the arithmetic yourself rather than reading the description, which is the whole method set out in how we assess products.

Why the 47-inch model is our overall pick

The bedding claim is the real differentiator. A stated 11 inches of capacity is more than PDSA asks for, and it is the only such claim we found on a mainstream enclosure. Depth is the specification that turns a big box into a burrow system, and most enclosures that clear the floor figure are limited to roughly ten inches by their wall height.

The material is the right one for a deep-bedded setup. Acrylic panels in an aluminum frame do not absorb urine, which matters when eleven inches of damp substrate sits against a wall for weeks at a time. This is the clearest advantage over the MDF-carcass Niteangel Vista, whose floor area is otherwise comparable.

It stacks. The frame is designed to take a second unit above, which means a second enclosure costs no extra floor space in the room. For anyone keeping two Syrians — which must mean two separate enclosures, because Syrians are solitary — that is a genuinely useful property rather than a marketing line.

Where acrylic costs you something

• It scratches, and a scratched panel is permanently cloudy. Use a soft cloth and nothing abrasive, and accept that the clarity will degrade over years.
• No climbing surface at all. Smooth panels give a hamster nothing to grip. For a digger this is irrelevant; for a climber it removes most of what it does, and the layout has to supply the enrichment instead.

Who should buy something else

Anyone keeping a hamster that visibly prefers climbing to digging. A solid-walled acrylic box removes bars entirely, and for that animal a wire cage with good bar spacing — accepting its smaller floor — is a genuine trade-off rather than an obvious downgrade. The honest best answer for that owner is a large enclosure plus climbing structures inside it, which is more work.

Also anyone who wants the enclosure to look like furniture. The aluminum-and-acrylic aesthetic is frankly industrial next to the Vista, and if the enclosure is going in a living room that matters more than the specification gap between them.

Verdict: the 47-inch model is our overall pick in best hamster cages, on the largest verified floor and the deepest stated bedding capacity in a material suited to both. Skip the smaller two unless you need a second or quarantine enclosure, in which case the 31-inch is a reasonable buy for that job and not for a primary home.
