Kaytee CritterTrail cages, measured

No CritterTrail we measured clears the published hamster floor minimum. The largest, the CritterTrail Super, gives about 448 square inches of usable base against 775 — 58 percent. The CritterTrail One Level gives 230 square inches, and Kaytee's own listing for it names gerbils and mice rather than hamsters. Connected tubes add volume, not continuous floor.

Most people reading this site started with a CritterTrail, because it is what a pet shop puts in front of you. So this page is not written to tell anyone off. It is written because the range is marketed on a property — expandability — that does not address the specification that actually matters, and knowing that changes what you do next.

The range, measured

Why the tubes do not count

The CritterTrail proposition is that you add units and tubes and the habitat grows. That is true of the volume and not of the floor, and every published hamster figure is a floor-area figure.

A hamster cannot nest in a two-inch tube, cannot store food in one, and cannot dig in one. What a tube provides is transit, and while transit has some enrichment value, it does not substitute for the separable areas — nest, food store, latrine, burrow, running space — that the floor-area figure exists to make possible. Two 230-square-inch pods joined by a tube are two enclosures that are each too small, not one that is big enough.

Tubes carry a second issue that has nothing to do with area: ventilation. A narrow enclosed tube is poorly ventilated, and a hamster that nests in one — which they do — is nesting somewhere humid. We cover that, and the getting-stuck question, in hamster cages with tubes: the safety questions.

What the range does well

6mm bar spacing on the One Level. Genuinely tight, and safe for the smallest animals. As a containment spec that is better than most of the category, and it is why this model is a perfectly good carrier or hospital cage.

Cleaning. These come apart easily and go back together easily, and the plastic disinfects properly. For a temporary or quarantine enclosure that is exactly what you want.

Availability and price. Stocked everywhere, cheap, and if you need a second enclosure this afternoon you can have one. That is a real advantage that a DETOLF conversion does not offer.

The unpublished bar spacing

Kaytee publishes 6mm for the One Level and, as far as we could find, does not publish a spacing figure for the CritterTrail Super. For a dwarf-hamster owner that absence is not neutral: it means you cannot check containment before buying, and it costs the product marks in our scoring for that reason alone. The reasoning is in hamster cage bar spacing, and it is a general principle rather than a complaint about one brand.

What to do if a CritterTrail is what you have

1. 1.Measure the base and work out where you actually are. Length times width, no tubes, no levels. Our cage size guide walks through it.
2. 2.Do not buy more tubes or another pod. That is the instinctive fix and it does not move the number. It also usually costs more than the next step.
3. 3.Convert a storage tub for less than a second CritterTrail unit costs. An hour with a drill and a piece of mesh clears the floor figure outright. Bin cage guide.
4. 4.Keep the CritterTrail as a carrier for cleaning days and a hospital cage. It is genuinely good at both and there is no need to throw it away.

Not a primary enclosure for a Syrian or a dwarf hamster. We include it because it is what most buyers are shown first, and because naming the gap is more useful than pretending the product does not exist.

Verdict: a well-made range at sizes that do not clear a published minimum, marketed on a property that does not address it. If you already own one it has genuine uses. If you are choosing a first enclosure, the money goes further in best hamster cages or into a tub conversion, and is my hamster cage too small is written for the moment you work out where you stand.
