Hamsters

Best hamster cages for beginners

A first-time buyer needs one thing the pet aisle will not sell them: a cage that clears the published floor minimum on the day it arrives, with nothing left to build.

A fluffy hamster perched on a wooden stool nibbling a food pellet

Buy the Niteangel Vista Medium. A first hamster cage has one job the shop will not help you with: clear the published floor minimum of 775 square inches on the day it arrives, with no lid to build and no mesh to retrofit. The Vista Medium is 40.7 x 22.7 inches — 924 square inches — which clears it by 19 percent while fitting a four-foot shelf, has a glass front so you can see whether the bedding is deep enough, and arrives as a cage rather than as a project. The BUCATSTATE 47in is the better cage and needs four feet of width. The IKEA DETOLF is the most floor per dollar in existence and needs you to build a lid, which is why it is not the beginner answer.

Hamster cage minimum size · minimum

100cm x 50cm

Our conversion: 5,000 cm2, or 775 square inches of continuous floor

Issued by PDSA (People's Dispensary for Sick Animals), read 27 September 2026. PDSA publishes this as a minimum cage size and adds that bigger is always better. It is stated for dwarf and Syrian hamsters alike.

The reason beginners need their own page is that the beginner's mistake is not a preference, it is an arithmetic failure, and it happens at the till. Almost every cage sold in a pet shop as a complete hamster starter kit is between a quarter and a half of the published minimum, and nothing on the box tells you that. Is my hamster cage too small is the page people usually find three weeks later, and it should not have to be.

So the filter here is not which cage is best. It is which cage a person buying their first hamster can order without knowing anything yet, and have the right answer arrive.

What a first cage has to do

  1. 1.Clear 775 square inches of continuous floor as sold. That is the PDSA minimum this site measures against. Not with a loft counted in, not with a shelf, not once you add a second unit.
  2. 2.Arrive finished. No lid to build, no mesh to cut, no hardware store trip. A beginner who has to fabricate something will either not do it or do it badly, and both outcomes are worse than a slightly smaller cage.
  3. 3.Hold deep bedding without spilling it. The PDSA also asks for bedding deep enough to burrow in, and a cage with low sides cannot deliver it no matter how much you pour in.
  4. 4.Let you see in. Not for entertainment: so you can see at a glance whether the bedding has dropped, whether the animal is using the wheel, and whether something is wrong. A wall of bars with bedding piled against it shows you nothing.
  5. 5.Be cleanable without dismantling. You will be doing this for two to three years, which is the whole life of the animal.

The three that clear the figure

All three give more than 900 square inches of floor against a 775 square inch minimum. Two of them arrive as finished cages; the third is a glass display cabinet that needs a lid, and is here because it is the cheapest compliant floor area available anywhere. The fourth product on this page is the near-miss, assessed in full below.

External dimensions and manufacturer bedding-depth claims are each manufacturer's own published figures, read 2026-09-27 and linked on every product card. Floor areas, the percentages and the DETOLF footprint laid on its back are our arithmetic from those dimensions, shown so you can check them.

One square inch, and why it is the most useful number on this page

The BUCATSTATE 39-inch model is 39.3 x 19.7 inches. Multiply it out and you get 774 square inches against a published minimum of 775. It is one square inch short.

We are not going to pretend a single square inch matters to a hamster. What matters is what the number teaches: the cage is the smaller model of a range whose larger model clears the figure by 43 percent, it is sold alongside it, the listing describes it in the same terms, and the only way to tell them apart on the one specification that counts is to multiply two numbers from the dimensions line. A beginner who learns to do that once will never buy a bad cage again, and a beginner who does not will buy whichever of the two is on offer.

Why the DETOLF is not the beginner pick

On pure numbers it should be. An IKEA DETOLF laid on its back is 1,086 square inches of tempered glass for less than almost any purpose-built cage, with 14.6 inches of usable height — enough for the roughly ten inches of substrate a Syrian actually wants.

It arrives as a display cabinet. There is no lid, so you build one from mesh and timber, and a badly built lid is an escape or a cat. There is a particleboard base that wants sealing. It weighs a great deal and glass does not forgive a dropped corner. The IKEA DETOLF hamster cage conversion is a full page on doing it properly, and it is a genuinely good first project — for someone who already owns a hamster, not for someone collecting one on Saturday.

What else you have to buy on day one

The cage is about half the first bill, and the other half is not optional. Going in without it is the second most common beginner mistake after the cage size.

  • Far more bedding than you expect. A 900-square-inch cage filled to a burrowing depth takes multiple large bags, and that is the point of buying the cage. The best hamster bedding is the shortlist; paper or aspen, never pine or cedar.
  • A wheel of the right diameter, bought at the same time as the cage. The size is species-specific and it is not negotiable; hamster wheel size is the page with the figures. A wheel that is too small causes spinal curvature, and the wheel in a starter kit is almost always too small.
  • A sand bath, a hide and something to chew. Cheap, and the difference between a cage and an enclosure.
  • Nothing with a tube, on day one. You can add tubes later once you understand ventilation and the animal's size. Hamster cages with tubes: what to actually worry about sets out why.

The hamster cage setup checklist is the single page to read before ordering anything, and if you have not yet decided on the species, best small pets for beginners compares hamsters against the alternatives on what each one actually needs.

The assessments

Our pick · Clearing the threshold in under four feet of shelf

Niteangel Vista Hamster Cage, Medium

The same design as the Large in a footprint that still clears 775 sq in, for a room that cannot take a four-foot enclosure.

Clears our threshold924 sq in vs our 775 sq in floor
Dimensions
40.7 x 22.7 x 22.9 in external (manufacturer-listed)
Continuous floor
40.7 x 22.7 = 924 sq in external footprint
Bar spacing
No bars on the long walls: MDF panels with a mesh top
Material
MDF carcass with aspen veneer, glass front, wire mesh lid
Bedding depth possible
Roughly 9 in behind the front glass

What it gets right

  • 924 sq in external footprint still clears the PDSA minimum
  • Fits a standard 42 in shelf or console where the Large does not
  • Same solid-wall construction for deep substrate

What it gets wrong

  • 22.9 in rear height limits how tall a wheel you can mount inside
  • Same MDF moisture caveat as the Large

Who should buy something else

Not the one if you have the space for the Large. The extra 145 sq in costs little and there is no welfare argument for choosing less floor.

Number 2 · Deep burrowing without a DIY build

BUCATSTATE Hamster Cage 3.0, 47 in

The deepest substrate capacity we could verify on a mainstream enclosure: an 11 in bedding claim on a 1,109 sq in floor is the combination almost nothing else offers.

Clears our threshold1,109 sq in vs our 775 sq in floor
Dimensions
47 x 23.6 x 25.5 in; manufacturer states 7.8 sq ft of floor
Continuous floor
47 x 23.6 = 1,109 sq in (7.7 sq ft) by our arithmetic
Bar spacing
No bars: clear acrylic panels in an aluminum frame
Material
Aluminum frame with thickened clear acrylic panels
Bedding depth possible
Manufacturer states the deep base takes up to 11 in of bedding

What it gets right

  • 1,109 sq in clears our 775 sq in floor by 43 percent
  • 11 in of stated bedding capacity exceeds PDSA's 25cm (10 in) figure
  • Acrylic and aluminum wipe clean and do not absorb urine
  • Stackable frame, so a second unit can go above without extra floor space

What it gets wrong

  • Acrylic scratches, and a scratched panel is permanently cloudy
  • No bars means no climbing surface; enrichment has to come from the layout
  • A full 11 in of substrate in this footprint is a lot of bedding to buy and replace

Who should buy something else

Wrong for a hamster that climbs rather than digs. If your animal spends its waking hours on the bars, an enclosure with no bars removes most of what it does.

Number 3 · The most floor area per dollar, if you will build a lid

IKEA DETOLF glass display cabinet

A furniture cabinet that gives 1,086 sq in of continuous floor for less than any purpose-built enclosure of that size, provided you accept that it ships without a lid.

Clears our threshold1,086 sq in vs our 775 sq in floor
Dimensions
163 x 43 x 37 cm (64.1 x 16.9 x 14.6 in)
Continuous floor
laid on its back, 163 x 43 cm = 7,009 cm2, or 1,086 sq in
Bar spacing
None: tempered glass on all four sides
Material
Tempered glass with a particleboard top and base, steel shelf supports
Usable height on its back
37cm (14.6 in), enough for roughly 10 in of substrate under a mesh lid

What it gets right

  • 1,086 sq in of continuous floor, 40 percent above our threshold
  • Glass is non-porous, wipe-clean and holds deep substrate without bowing
  • Widely available and easy to replace a panel on

What it gets wrong

  • No lid is supplied. You must build or buy a mesh top, which is real work
  • Not sold as a pet enclosure, so no manufacturer supports that use
  • Heavy, and the glass makes it awkward for one person to move
  • No climbing surfaces at all

Who should buy something else

Not for anyone who wants an out-of-the-box solution. It is a cabinet, and turning it into safe housing is a small project with a mesh lid at the end of it.

Number 4 · A dwarf hamster in a tight space

BUCATSTATE Hamster Cage 3.0, 39 in

Lands within one square inch of the 775 sq in minimum, which makes it the smallest enclosure we are willing to list and a borderline call we would rather you avoided.

Falls below our threshold774 sq in, one square inch under the 775 sq in minimum
Dimensions
39.3 x 19.7 x 20.4 in; manufacturer states 5.4 sq ft of floor
Continuous floor
39.3 x 19.7 = 774 sq in (5.4 sq ft) by our arithmetic
Bar spacing
No bars: clear acrylic panels in an aluminum frame
Material
Aluminum frame with thickened clear acrylic panels
Bedding depth possible
Deep base, though shallower than the 47 in model

What it gets right

  • 5.4 sq ft is more floor than most cages sold as complete hamster kits
  • Wipe-clean acrylic and aluminum
  • Stackable, so it grows upwards

What it gets wrong

  • 774 sq in is one square inch under the PDSA minimum of 5,000 cm2
  • A 12 in wheel is a tight fit at 20.4 in of height
  • No climbing surfaces

Who should buy something else

Do not buy this for a Syrian. It sits on the threshold rather than over it, and a Syrian with a 12 in wheel inside this footprint has very little floor left.

What we would buy

The Niteangel Vista Medium for most first-time buyers. It clears the figure, it fits a four-foot shelf, it arrives assembled enough to use, the glass front means you can see the bedding depth rather than guessing at it, and nothing about it requires you to have learned anything first. Its weakness is the MDF carcass, which is not a wipe-clean surface if the liner is breached — a real limitation, and a manageable one.

The BUCATSTATE 47-inch if you have the width. It is 43 percent over the minimum, the acrylic panels wipe clean where MDF does not, and the manufacturer states the base takes up to 11 inches of bedding, which is the most of anything here. It is the better cage and it needs four feet of shelf.

Not the 39-inch BUCATSTATE, on a technicality that is worth respecting rather than waving away. And not the DETOLF as a first cage, for all the reasons above — come back to it as a second enclosure once you know what you are doing.

Questions people ask

What is the best hamster cage for a beginner?
The Niteangel Vista Medium. At 40.7 x 22.7 inches it gives 924 square inches of floor against a 775 square inch published minimum, fits a four-foot shelf, has a glass front so you can see the bedding depth, and arrives as a finished cage rather than as a project. The BUCATSTATE 47-inch is a better cage if you have the width for it.
How big should a first hamster cage be?
At least 775 square inches of continuous floor, which is the PDSA minimum this site measures everything against. Multiply the internal length by the internal width in inches; if the answer is under 775, the cage is under the figure, and lofts, shelves, ramps and tube pods do not count towards it.
Are pet store starter kits good enough for a hamster?
Almost never. The complete hamster starter kits sold in pet shops are typically between a quarter and a half of the 775 square inch minimum, and the wheel included is usually too small for the animal as well. The box will not tell you either of those things, which is why the multiplication is worth learning.
Is the BUCATSTATE 39-inch cage big enough?
It is one square inch short: 39.3 x 19.7 inches is 774 square inches against a 775 square inch minimum. A single square inch does not matter to a hamster, but the cage is the smaller model of a range whose 47-inch version clears the figure by 43 percent, and the only way to tell them apart is to multiply the dimensions. Buy the larger one.
Should a beginner convert an IKEA DETOLF?
Not as a first cage. A DETOLF laid on its back gives 1,086 square inches for less than almost any purpose-built enclosure, which is why it appears on this page — but it arrives as a display cabinet with no lid, and a badly built lid is an escape. It is an excellent second enclosure or a good project once you already own the animal.
What else do I need to buy with a first hamster cage?
More bedding than you expect — a 900 square inch cage filled to burrowing depth takes several large bags — plus a wheel of the correct diameter for the species, a sand bath, a hide and something to chew. The wheel is the one not to buy later: the wheel included in a starter kit is almost always too small, and an undersized wheel curves the animal's spine.
