Best hamster cages under $100

An IKEA DETOLF laid on its back, or a converted storage tub. Those are the two routes at this budget that clear the published 775 square inch minimum, and neither is sold as a hamster cage. Everything in the shop that is marketed as one at this price fails the figure — the closest by 29 percent, the worst by 70.

Why the budget category fails

Floor area is the cheapest thing to remove from a cage and the hardest thing for a buyer to check in a shop. Plastic, packaging, a wheel, tubes, a water bottle and a brand all cost money and all survive a price cut; twenty inches of width does not. So the sub-$100 shelf fills up with cages that have every accessory and no room.

The two things that actually work at this budget

A storage tub

A large clear storage tub with a mesh panel cut into the lid gives more floor than anything in the budget cage aisle, has solid walls to the top so it holds any depth of substrate you pour in, and is clear-sided so you can see the burrow. It is the cheapest enclosure that clears the figure, by a distance.

The part people get wrong is ventilation: too little and it is humid, too much cut in the wrong place and the substrate dries out and stops holding tunnels. The sizing, the mesh and the method are on the bin cage guide.

A DETOLF on its back

1,086 square inches of tempered glass, 40 percent past the minimum, and nothing a hamster can chew. Two catches: it is heavy and awkward, and at 14.6 inches deep it will not hold ten inches of bedding and a 12-inch wheel at the same time, so you grade the bedding or mount the wheel in a shallower zone. What we would buy

A storage tub first, on the arithmetic, and a DETOLF if you want something that looks like furniture and you can carry it. Both clear the published figure at a budget where nothing purpose-built does.

Of the products actually sold as hamster cages here, the Prevue 528 is the best of a failing group: proper 3/8 inch bar spacing, a genuinely deep base by wire-cage standards, and 480 square inches, which is 38 percent short. We would rather tell you that than rank four inadequate cages against each other and call the least bad one a recommendation.
