The best small animal cages
Nothing on sale is right for every small pet. Five enclosures, each measured against the figure published for the animal it is actually for.

There is no single best small animal cage, and any page that names one is ignoring the figures. The published minimums differ by species by more than a factor of twenty — PDSA asks for 100 x 50cm of floor for a hamster, Humane World for Animals asks for 7.5 square feet for a guinea pig, and the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund asks for 3m x 2m for a pair of rabbits — so a cage that is generous for one animal is a welfare problem for another. Our picks, one per species: the Niteangel Vista Large for a hamster or a pair of gerbils, the Kavee C&C 4x2 for guinea pigs, the MidWest Critter Nation 162 for ferrets or rats, and MidWest exercise pens for rabbits, bought four at a time. If the constraint is money rather than species, an IKEA DETOLF laid on its back gives the cheapest compliant floor area in existence for any burrowing rodent.
This page exists because the search is generic and the answer cannot be. Most small-animal cage roundups solve that by ranking cages on build quality and price and leaving the species question to the reader, which produces a list where the top pick is wrong for most of the people reading it. We would rather print the five figures and attach one product to each.
The published figures, by species
| Animal | Published figure | Issuer | As floor area |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hamster (Syrian or dwarf) | 100cm x 50cm | PDSA | 775 sq in |
| Gerbils, pair | 100cm x 50cm x 50cm high | Woodgreen Pets Charity | 775 sq in |
| Guinea pigs, pair | 7.5 sq ft minimum, 10.5 sq ft preferred | Humane World for Animals | 1,080 to 1,512 sq in |
| Rats, one or two | 24 x 24 x 24in with multiple levels, 1/2in bars | MSPCA | 576 sq in of footprint |
| Ferret | 24 x 24 x 18in high | VCA Animal Hospitals | 576 sq in |
| Chinchilla, one | 3ft x 2ft x 3ft | VCA Animal Hospitals | 864 sq in |
| Rabbits, pair | 3m x 2m x 1m high | RWAF and the RSPCA | About 9,290 sq in |
Each figure is quoted from the issuer's own page, all of which are linked in the sources below. The floor-area column is our conversion. Two of these are worded as suggested minimums rather than standards — the ferret and rat figures — and we have kept that wording in the body text where it matters.
Read the first and last rows together. A rabbit's published minimum is twelve times a hamster's. That is the entire reason this page is structured by animal, and it is also why the rabbit pick is a modular pen rather than a cage: nothing sold as a rabbit cage comes close to the figure, which is a point the rabbit hub makes at length.

The three that cover most households
The deep-bedding enclosure for a hamster or gerbils, the grid cage that clears the preferred guinea pig figure for a pair, and the half-inch-barred two-level cage that is the right answer for both ferrets and rats. Full assessments of all five are further down.
IllustrativeA Syrian that needs real burrowing depth
Niteangel Vista Hamster Cage, Large
47.1 x 22.7 = 1,069 sq in external footprint
The largest mainstream single-piece hamster enclosure we could verify, and the only one whose external footprint clears our 775 sq in floor with room to spare even after you allow for wall thickness.

Kavee 4x2 C&C Cage for Guinea Pigs
55.1 x 27.6 = 1,521 sq in, about 10.6 sq ft
10.6 sq ft in one unbroken block clears the preferred figure for a pair rather than the bare minimum, which no pet-store guinea pig cage does at any price.

IllustrativeFerrets of any age, and kits especially
MidWest Critter Nation Double Unit (162)
36 x 24 = 864 sq in (6 sq ft) per level, two levels
The half-inch bar spacing is the whole argument: it is the same cage as the Ferret Nation with a gap a ferret kit cannot get its head through.

Hamsters and gerbils: Niteangel Vista Large
47.1 x 22.7in gives 1,069 square inches against the 775 PDSA publishes, with solid panels on three sides, a glass front and a mesh lid. The reason it wins for both animals is bedding depth: PDSA asks for at least 25cm of substrate for a hamster and Woodgreen asks for 8 to 10 inches throughout for gerbils, and a wire cage physically cannot hold either. The Vista's deep glass front takes roughly ten inches.
Hamster cage minimum size · minimum
100cm x 50cm
Our conversion: 5,000 cm2, or 775 square inches of continuous floor
The caveat is the material. It is an MDF carcass with aspen veneer, so it absorbs urine if the floor liner is breached and it is not a surface you hose. If you want a wipe-clean enclosure at the same floor area, the acrylic BUCATSTATE 3.0 47in is the alternative — the best glass hamster cages ranks that category, and the best gerbil cages does the same from the gerbil guidance, which rules out wire cages outright.
Guinea pigs: Kavee C&C 4x2
55.1 x 27.6in is 1,521 square inches, about 10.6 square feet, which clears the 10.5 square feet Humane World for Animals names as preferred for a pair — not the 7.5 square foot bare minimum. We aim at the preferred figure here because guinea pigs are obligately social, so a pair is the normal case, and 7.5 square feet between two animals is a floor set to prevent the worst outcome rather than to produce a good one.
Guinea pig cage minimum · minimum
7.5 sq ft (about 30in x 36in) bare minimum for one; 7.5 sq ft minimum for two, with at least 10.5 sq ft (30in x 50in) preferred
The grid system also matters for the reason nothing else on this page can match: it extends. Four more grids turn a 4x2 into a 6x2 at about 15.8 square feet, which is the published preferred footprint for four pigs. Same guidance also rules out three things by name — plastic tubs, glass aquariums and wire floors — so the enclosure people improvise at larger sizes is not an option. Guinea pig cage size has the full ladder.
Ferrets and rats: MidWest Critter Nation 162
One cage, two species, for the same reason: half-inch bar spacing. The MSPCA's rat figure specifies bars half an inch apart, and half an inch is also the spacing that holds a ferret kit where one inch does not. The 162 gives 36 x 24in per level across two levels with a locking swing-up ramp, which clears both the MSPCA's 24-inch cube and VCA's 24 x 24 x 18in with room to spare.
Rat cage suggested minimum · suggested minimum
a 24in x 24in x 24in wire cage with multiple levels for one or two rats, with bars 1/2in apart
Our conversion: 576 square inches (4 square feet) of footprint, spread over more than one level
Two conditions on it. Both the MSPCA and the RSPCA ask for a solid floor rather than wire mesh, and the MSPCA warns specifically that wire platforms and bottoms can abrade feet — so the pans need lining. And the peer-reviewed expert consensus on rat housing asks for considerably more than the MSPCA figure, which we report rather than reconcile. The best rat cages sets out both, and the best ferret cages covers the ferret side.
Rabbits: MidWest exercise pens, four of them
This is the pick that does not look like a cage, and it is the only honest one. RWAF and the RSPCA independently publish 3m x 2m x 1m — about 64.5 square feet — and RWAF adds that it must be a single continuous block, with upper floors, platforms, tunnels and connectors excluded. The largest timber hutch we assess states 17.46 square feet. One 48-inch pen encloses 16 square feet; four joined into one footprint clear the figure.
Rabbit enclosure minimum · minimum
a single enclosed area of at least 3m x 2m by 1m high
Our conversion: 9ft 10in x 6ft 7in x 3ft 3in, about 64.5 square feet of floor
A pen is containment rather than protection, so an outdoor setup needs a secured top and an anti-dig perimeter, and it needs a shelter inside the footprint — RWAF publishes 1.8m x 0.6m x 0.6m for that. The best rabbit runs measures the options and rabbit run size covers the figure and its conditions.
The budget answer: IKEA DETOLF
A glass display cabinet laid on its back gives 1,086 square inches of tempered glass, which is more floor than any purpose-built hamster or gerbil enclosure and a fraction of the price. Woodgreen names cabinets of this type by name as suitable gerbil housing, with a homemade lid of 1cm welded mesh. It is the cheapest compliant floor area available for any burrowing rodent and it is the pick we would make on a tight budget without hesitation.
What you are taking on is the finishing. It arrives with no lid, no ventilation and no wheel mount, and 14.6 inches of usable height is enough for ten inches of substrate plus a twelve-inch wheel but not generous. The DETOLF conversion guide is the build, and hamster cage ventilation is the part to get right, because in a solid-sided box the lid is the ventilation system.
What none of these is for
- Chinchillas. VCA asks for 3ft x 2ft x 3ft for one and 3ft x 2ft x 5ft for a pair, rules out galvanized wire because of the zinc, and asks for multiple levels. That is a specific cage shape and the best chinchilla cages covers it.
- Mice. Nothing here is sold with bar spacing fine enough for a mouse except the solid-walled enclosures, which do work. A wire cage at 3/8in will not hold one.
- Two species together. None of the published guidance contemplates mixed-species housing and neither do we.
- A carrier. Every enclosure here is a permanent home. The small plastic habitats sold alongside them are carriers at best, which is the argument the CritterTrail page makes with the arithmetic.
The assessments
Our pick · A Syrian that needs real burrowing depth
Niteangel Vista Hamster Cage, Large
The largest mainstream single-piece hamster enclosure we could verify, and the only one whose external footprint clears our 775 sq in floor with room to spare even after you allow for wall thickness.
- Dimensions
- 47.1 x 22.7 x 26.9 in external (manufacturer-listed)
- Continuous floor
- 47.1 x 22.7 = 1,069 sq in external footprint
- Bar spacing
- No bars on the long walls: MDF panels with a mesh top
- Material
- MDF carcass with aspen veneer, glass front, wire mesh lid
- Bedding depth possible
- Deep front glass panel takes roughly 10 in of substrate
What it gets right
- 1,069 sq in external footprint clears the 775 sq in PDSA minimum by a wide margin
- Solid panels on three sides mean substrate can be piled deep without spilling
- Mesh lid takes a 12 in wheel mounted from above
- Front glass makes bedding depth visible, so you can see when it drops below 10 in
What it gets wrong
- MDF absorbs urine if the liner is breached; it is not a wipe-clean surface
- Heavy and awkward to move once filled with 10 in of substrate
- Assembly is not tool-free
Who should buy something else
Skip it if you want to hose the enclosure out. MDF and water are a bad combination, and a glass tank or a coated-steel cage is the better choice for anyone who cleans that way.

Number 2 · A pair of guinea pigs, indoors
Kavee 4x2 C&C Cage for Guinea Pigs
10.6 sq ft in one unbroken block clears the preferred figure for a pair rather than the bare minimum, which no pet-store guinea pig cage does at any price.
- Dimensions
- 55.1 x 27.6 x 13.8 in (1.40 x 0.70 x 0.35 m) without a stand
- Continuous floor
- 55.1 x 27.6 = 1,521 sq in, about 10.6 sq ft
- Bar spacing
- Powder-coated steel grids, 9 x 9 grid apertures
- Material
- Powder-coated steel grids, ABS connectors, corrugated polypropylene base
- Wall height
- 13.8 in, above the 12 in minimum published for guinea pigs
What it gets right
- 10.6 sq ft clears the 10.5 sq ft preferred area for two guinea pigs
- 13.8 in walls clear the published 12 in minimum
- Solid correx base, not wire, which the published guidance requires
- Modular, so a 5x2 or 6x2 is an upgrade rather than a replacement
What it gets wrong
- Open top, so it is not cat-safe or child-proof without a lid
- Correx base creases at the corners and eventually needs replacing
- Grid apertures are wide enough that a baby guinea pig can get through the lower row
Who should buy something else
Not for a household with a cat or a dog unless you add a lid. An open-topped pen in a room with a predator in it is not housing, whatever its footprint.

Number 3 · Ferrets of any age, and kits especially
MidWest Critter Nation Double Unit (162)
The half-inch bar spacing is the whole argument: it is the same cage as the Ferret Nation with a gap a ferret kit cannot get its head through.
- Dimensions
- 36 x 24 x 63 in including the rolling stand
- Continuous floor
- 36 x 24 = 864 sq in (6 sq ft) per level, two levels
- Bar spacing
- 1/2 in horizontal
- Material
- Powder-coated steel with deep removable plastic pans
- Levels and ramps
- Two levels with a locking swing-up ramp and full-width doors
What it gets right
- 1/2 in bar spacing holds a kit that 1 in spacing does not
- 6 sq ft of usable floor per level, comfortably over our per-level bar
- Full-width doors mean you can reach every corner, which matters weekly
- Deep pans contain litter rather than spreading it
What it gets wrong
- Horizontal half-inch bars give less climbing purchase than wider spacing
- Heavy and awkward to assemble alone
- The stand's casters roll on hard floors more than you want them to
Who should buy something else
Not necessary if your ferrets are adults and you have measured their head width against 1 in. The Ferret Nation costs less and climbs better; the half-inch is insurance you may not need.

Number 4 · Building a footprint that actually clears the published minimum
MidWest Homes for Pets 48 in Exercise Pen, 8 panels
The cheapest honest route to the 64.5 sq ft minimum, because four of these pens joined together get you there and a single hutch never will.
- Dimensions
- Eight panels, each 24 in wide by 48 in high; 16 sq ft enclosed
- Continuous floor
- 16 sq ft (2,304 sq in) enclosed as an octagon
- Bar spacing
- Mesh aperture listed as 1.5 x 6 in
- Material
- Heavy-gauge wire with an e-coat finish
- Expandability
- Add-on panels sold separately; pens clip together into one footprint
What it gets right
- 16 sq ft per pen, and add-on panels let you build one large block rather than several small ones
- 48 in height clears the 3ft 3in RWAF asks for
- Folds flat, so it can be moved or stored
- Ground anchors are included, which most pens leave out
What it gets wrong
- 1.5 x 6 in mesh apertures are wide enough for a small or young rabbit to push through; line the lower section
- No roof, so it is not predator-proof outdoors on its own
- Wire floor is the ground, which means digging out unless you lay mesh underneath
Who should buy something else
Not an outdoor enclosure by itself. Without a roof and a dug-in mesh skirt it is an exercise area, not secure housing, and a fox will treat it as a bowl.

Number 5 · The most floor area per dollar, if you will build a lid
IKEA DETOLF glass display cabinet
A furniture cabinet that gives 1,086 sq in of continuous floor for less than any purpose-built enclosure of that size, provided you accept that it ships without a lid.
- Dimensions
- 163 x 43 x 37 cm (64.1 x 16.9 x 14.6 in)
- Continuous floor
- laid on its back, 163 x 43 cm = 7,009 cm2, or 1,086 sq in
- Bar spacing
- None: tempered glass on all four sides
- Material
- Tempered glass with a particleboard top and base, steel shelf supports
- Usable height on its back
- 37cm (14.6 in), enough for roughly 10 in of substrate under a mesh lid
What it gets right
- 1,086 sq in of continuous floor, 40 percent above our threshold
- Glass is non-porous, wipe-clean and holds deep substrate without bowing
- Widely available and easy to replace a panel on
What it gets wrong
- No lid is supplied. You must build or buy a mesh top, which is real work
- Not sold as a pet enclosure, so no manufacturer supports that use
- Heavy, and the glass makes it awkward for one person to move
- No climbing surfaces at all
Who should buy something else
Not for anyone who wants an out-of-the-box solution. It is a cabinet, and turning it into safe housing is a small project with a mesh lid at the end of it.

What we would buy
Whichever one of these matches the animal you actually have, and in every case the largest version of it the room takes. The one piece of advice that holds across all five species is the one nobody follows: measure the floor area of the enclosure you are considering, compare it to the figure published for your animal, and buy on that rather than on the photograph. Small pet housing is the page that puts every figure in one place so you can do that in thirty seconds.
