Ferrets

What should you not put in a ferret cage?

A ferret eats what it chews. That one fact decides the whole list, and it rules out several things sold specifically for ferret cages.

A ferret cage interior with fabric bedding and a hammock

Keep foam, plastic and rubber objects out of the cage — VCA names shoe inserts, earplugs, rubber bands, balloons and foam from speakers or headphones specifically. Keep clumping cat litter out, because ferrets eat it and VCA warns it leads to serious intestinal upset and ulceration. Keep newspaper and wood chips out, which the MSD Veterinary Manual rules out by name as bedding. And keep out any fabric that unravels or that your ferret is chewing — MSD says to check that fabric will not unravel and that the ferret does not eat it, and VCA says that if you see your ferret chewing its bedding, remove it immediately. The single principle behind the entire list is that a ferret swallows what it chews, and a swallowed piece of soft rubber or foam is an intestinal blockage, which is a surgical emergency rather than an upset stomach.

This is the one safety page on this site where the hazard is not the cage. A ferret cage is a box of fabric, plastic and litter, all of it chosen by a human and all of it within reach of an animal whose defining behavior is putting unfamiliar objects in its mouth. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists gastrointestinal foreign bodies among the emergencies ferrets present with. Everything below is organized by the mechanism of harm, because that is what tells you whether a substitute is safe.

1. Things a ferret will swallow

This is the group that kills ferrets, and it is the reason the list looks fussy. Soft rubber and foam are the worst because they are satisfying to chew, they tear into swallowable pieces, and they do not show up well on an X-ray.

  • Soft rubber and latex of any kind. VCA's named examples are shoe inserts, earplugs, rubber bands and balloons. Add latex-foam dog toys, rubber feet from furniture, and the soft rubber seals on water bottles once they perish.
  • Foam. Speaker and headphone foam is named by VCA. Also foam padding inside beds and the foam inserts sold in some sleep sacks.
  • Clumping cat litter. VCA warns ferrets may eat it, leading to serious intestinal upset and ulceration; MSD separately says to avoid clumping types, which may cause respiratory problems. Two sources, two mechanisms, one answer. Ferret cage flooring covers what to use in the litter corner instead.
  • Fabric that unravels. MSD asks you to check that fabric will not unravel. A loose-weave blanket becomes a pile of threads, and threads are the classic linear foreign body.
  • Small hard parts. Bell balls, plastic eyes on toys, screw caps, and the plastic clips on cheap hammocks.

2. Things a ferret will breathe

A ferret sleeps with its face buried in whatever is in the cage, which makes the respiratory group more serious than it looks for an animal of that size.

  • Pine and cedar shavings. Softwood shavings are ruled out across this site on the phenol evidence, and the reasoning is the same for ferrets as it is for every other species here. See hamster bedding: pine and cedar for the detail.
  • Wood chips. MSD rules these out as ferret bedding by name, separately from the softwood question.
  • Dusty litter of any kind, clumping or not. MSD's concern with clumping litters is respiratory as well as digestive.
  • Scented or deodorized bedding and litter. A deodorizer is there for the person cleaning the cage. The ferret cannot leave the smell.
  • Cleaning products not rinsed off. VCA's instruction is soap and water at least weekly. Cage cleaning safety covers what is safe to use and what has to be rinsed.

3. Things a ferret will get stuck in or fall from

  • Anything with a loop a head fits through. Elastic loops, drawstrings and the cord handles on fabric tunnels.
  • Exercise wheels built for other species. A slatted or barred running surface is a limb trap, and ferrets are not wheel animals in the way a hamster is.
  • Uncovered upper levels and ramps. Ferrets have poor eyesight and misjudge jumps — PDSA's wording is to make sure they cannot fall far if they misjudge a jump. How high can ferrets jump is the page on that.
  • Bare wire floors and ramps. MSD is explicit that bare wire may harm the pads on a ferret's paws, and says to pad the bottom of the cage or buy one with a solid bottom.
  • Gaps at pan level. A cage is only as secure as its worst gap. Escape-proofing walks the whole perimeter.

4. Newspaper, and why it is on the list

MSD rules out newspaper as ferret bedding by name alongside wood chips. It is worth separating out because newspaper is the thing people reach for when they want something cheap and absorbent, and because it is not an obvious hazard in the way a rubber band is. The practical problems are that it shreds into swallowable wet pulp, it gives no insulation, and it holds urine against the animal rather than away from it.

What to use instead is settled and cheap: washable fabric for the sleeping and lounging surfaces, and a paper-based litter in the pan. VCA names towels, blankets or T-shirts as bedding, with the chewing caveat. The best ferret bedding ranks the fabric options and ferret bedding safety covers the weekly fabric check that catches a blanket starting to unravel.

What to put in instead

A fitted fleece liner cut to the Nation pan so there are no loose corners to chew, and two paper-based beddings for the litter corner that avoid both the clumping-litter problem and the softwood one. Check all three weekly for tooth marks and replace anything losing material.

The weekly two-minute audit

  1. 1.Take every soft object out of the cage and look at the edges. Missing material means it goes in the bin, not back in the cage.
  2. 2.Run a hand over each fabric item for loose threads or a fraying seam.
  3. 3.Check the hammock clips and any plastic fittings for tooth marks.
  4. 4.Look at the litter pan: if the litter is clumping, replace it with a paper-based product today.
  5. 5.Walk the perimeter for new gaps at pan level and check the latches.

Two minutes, weekly, and it catches the whole of group one before it becomes a surgery. Fold it into the clean — how to clean a ferret cage sets out the daily and weekly routine the published guidance actually asks for.

Questions people ask

What should you not put in a ferret cage?
Foam, plastic and rubber objects — VCA names shoe inserts, earplugs, rubber bands, balloons and speaker or headphone foam. Also clumping cat litter, newspaper, wood chips, pine and cedar shavings, any fabric that unravels, and anything your ferret is actively chewing. The common thread is that ferrets swallow what they chew.
Why is clumping cat litter dangerous for ferrets?
Two reasons from two sources. VCA warns that ferrets may eat it, leading to serious intestinal upset and ulceration. The MSD Veterinary Manual separately says to avoid clumping types because they may cause respiratory problems. Use a paper-based litter in the pan instead.
Can ferrets have blankets and towels in the cage?
Yes — VCA names towels, blankets or T-shirts as bedding. The conditions are that the fabric does not unravel, which MSD asks you to check, and that you remove it immediately if you see the ferret chewing it. Fitted liners are easier to keep safe than loose blankets because there are no loose corners to start on.
Are rubber toys safe for ferrets?
No. Soft rubber is the single worst thing to leave in a ferret cage, because it chews into swallowable pieces and a swallowed piece is an intestinal blockage rather than an upset stomach. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists gastrointestinal foreign bodies among the emergencies ferrets are presented with.
Is newspaper safe as ferret bedding?
The MSD Veterinary Manual rules out newspaper and wood chips as ferret bedding by name. It shreds into wet pulp the animal can swallow, gives no insulation and holds urine against the ferret. Washable fabric for the sleeping surfaces and paper-based litter in the pan is the standard answer.
Can I put an exercise wheel in a ferret cage?
We would not. Any wheel with a slatted or barred running surface is a limb trap, and ferrets do not use a wheel the way a hamster does. Put the enrichment into tunnels, hammocks, a dig box and out-of-cage time instead.
